Study Notes
Protozoan Diseases
- Leishmaniasis is caused by Leishmania donovani and transmitted through sandfly bites, causing skin sores, fever, weight loss, and enlargement of the spleen and liver.
- Amoebiasis is caused by Entamoeba histolytica and transmitted through ingestion of cysts in contaminated food or water, causing diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood/mucus in stool, and liver abscess.
- Trichomoniasis is caused by Trichomonas vaginalis and transmitted through sexual contact, causing itching, burning during urination, and discharge from the genital tract.
- Trypanosomiasis is caused by Trypanosoma brucei and transmitted through tsetse fly bites, causing fever, headache, joint pains, itching, and later neurological problems and sleep disturbances.
- Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii and transmitted through ingestion of oocysts in contaminated food or water, undercooked meat, or cat feces, causing flu-like symptoms and serious complications in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women.
Parasitic Helminths
Schistosomiasis (Bilharziasis)
- Caused by Schistosoma spp. and transmitted through skin contact with contaminated water, causing cough, difficulty breathing, and enlarged spleen, liver, and lymph nodes.
Pathogenic Helminths
- Loa Loa causes loiasis, transmitted through insect bites, causing localized swelling of the dermis and subdermal tissues, and eye pain as worms migrate.
- Onchocerca volvulus causes river blindness, transmitted through blackfly bites, causing blindness, and swelling around the eyes, retinitis, and impaired vision.
- Toxocara canis causes toxocariasis, transmitted through contaminated soil or feces, causing localized swelling of the dermis and subdermal tissues, and eye pain as worms migrate.
Sites of Infection
- Eyes: Loa Loa, Onchocerca volvulus, and Toxocara canis
- Circulatory and Lymphatic Systems: Schistosoma spp., Wuchereria bancrofti
- Gastrointestinal System: Various helminths, including Ancylostoma duodenale, Ascaris lumbricoides, Clonorchis sinensis, Diphyllobothrium latum, Echinococcus granulosus, Enterobius vermicularis, Fasciola hepatica, Necator americanus, Strongyloides stercoralis, Taenia spp., and Trichinella spp.
