Study Notes
Identification and Social Change
- Identification acts as a barrier to prevent minority group members from leaving the group, as they support protest actions to achieve social change and show loyalty to their group.
Realistic Group Conflict Theory
- Intergroup competition and conflict over valued resources (negative interdependence) is the root cause of prejudice and discrimination.
- 3 basic propositions:
- Competition over valued resources results in feelings of threat.
- The more ingroup members feel that their group is threatened by an outgroup, the more they will be prejudiced toward and discriminate against members of the outgroup.
- Objective intergroup conflicts of interest result in prejudice and discrimination.
Relative Deprivation Theory
- Feeling that you or your group is being unfairly deprived, with two types of deprivation:
- Egoistic (personal): feeling deprived relative to other individuals.
- Collective (group): feeling that your group is deprived relative to other groups.
Maier & Hinsz (2004) "Hot Sauce" Study
- Participants who tried hot sauce were allowed to choose an amount to send to the other group.
- Results: when in groups, participants sent double the amount of hot sauce to the other group.
Discontinuity Effect
- Groups are more competitive when interacting with other groups, relative to individuals interacting with other individuals.
- Evidenced by the prisoner's dilemma game and the Maier & Hinsz hot sauce study.
Factors Influencing Group Behavior (Inska et al.)
- 3 factors influence groups:
- Greed: groups are greedier than individuals.
- Fear: groups fear more than individuals.
- Identity: people who strongly identify with their group are most likely to support competitive actions to win against an outgroup.
Tit-for-Tat Strategy
- Best strategy to optimise points in prisoner's dilemma: each group will mirror the other group's strategy, then the other group notices and adjusts, usually resulting in more cooperation.
Injustice Types
- 2 types of injustices:
- Distributive (in)justice: inequitable distribution of resources among groups.
- Procedural (in)justice: the procedures used to distribute resources are unfair.
Group Identification and Social Movement
- Strong group identification is not a prerequisite for joining a social movement.
- People who strongly identify with their group:
- Feel collective relative deprivation (CRD) more strongly.
- Are more likely to protest regardless of their feelings of collective deprivation.

Description
Explore the phenomenon of the discontinuity effect, where groups exhibit significantly higher competitiveness when interacting with other groups compared to individuals. Learn about the influence of greed, fear, and group identity on group behavior through studies like the prisoner's dilemma game and the hot sauce study by Maier & Hinz.
