Categories of Disabilities
- Developmental Disabilities: Include intellectual disability (also known as mental retardation), autism, learning disabilities, and ADHD.
- Physical and Sensory Disabilities: Characterized by limitations in senses or body functions, such as blindness, deafness, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, etc.
- Emotional Behavioral Disorders: Include problems with emotional regulation and behavior management.
- Giftedness: Defined by a high IQ.
- Multiple Disabilities: Having two or more disabilities, like blindness and deafness.
Intellectual Disability/Disability
- Previously termed Mental Retardation (Delayed), but now considered offensive.
- Individuals with intellectual disability struggle with: Reasoning, problem-solving, planning, abstract reasoning, judgment, academic learning, and experiential learning.
- They may also have trouble adapting to daily life tasks.
- Different levels of intellectual disability based on IQ scores, formal operational development is rare in severe cases of intellectual disability
- A score of 70 IQ is the border line, not fully retarded.
Risk Factors
- Prenatal: Malnutrition, age of mother, exposure to alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs.
- Perinatal: High blood pressure or eclampsia during labor, oxygen deprivation.
- Postnatal: Malnutrition, lack of emotional support, high fever, meningitis, LED exposure.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Often, children will have at least 6 symptoms, appearing before age 7, and present in at least 2 settings.
- ADHD affects academic, social, and relations.
- It is clinically checked to confirm diagnoses.
- 3 Categories: ADHD in Attention or Attention Deficit Disorder / ADD.
- Symptoms: Inattention (fails to listen, careless mistakes, difficulty organizing, avoids tasks, loses things, easily distracted, forgetful, trouble following instructions) and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity (fidgets, leaves seat, runs/climbs excessively, difficulty engaging in quiet activities, talks incessantly, interrupts others, difficult to wait).
Learning Disabilities
- Dyslexia: Difficulty with reading, including decoding, fluency, comprehension.
- Dyscalculia: Problems with calculation, mathematical concepts, and symbols organization.
- Dysgraphia: Difficulty with handwriting, fine motor skills, spacing, and spelling consistency.
- Auditory Learning Disability/Auditory Processing Disorder (Receptive language): Difficulty differentiating sounds, identifying the source of sounds, organizing sounds.
- Language Learning/Processing Disorder: Difficulty understanding language, connecting meaning to sounds, expressing language, grammar.
- Nonverbal Learning Disorder: Difficulty interpreting non-verbal cues from facial expressions, gestures, and body language.
Communication Disorders
- Speech disorders: Affect the production and flow of speech sounds. (Articulation, omission, addition, substitution, distortion, stuttering, phonological disorders)
- Voice disorders: Difficulties with the quality or pitch of the voice.
- Fluency disorders: Problems with the flow and rhythm of speech (stuttering and cluttering).
Impairment/Disorder
- Receptive Language: Difficulty understanding or listening.
- Expressive Language: Difficulty expressing thoughts or ideas.
