Study Notes
Learner Digital Experience Insights Survey 2022/23
- The survey explores learners' experiences using digital technology in further education.
- It took place between October 2022 and April 2023.
- FE (Further Education) colleges and sixth form colleges chose their survey period within this timeframe of 3-4 weeks.
- A total of 8,788 respondents participated from 23 organizations.
- 19 of the organizations were in England, 2 in Scotland, and 2 in Northern Ireland, representing 9% of UK FE providers.
- A separate analysis was conducted in 2022/23 on the digital experience of learners in Welsh colleges.
- The organisation with the highest responses included 1,520 learners, representing 28% of their learner population.
- The mean number of responses per organization was 382, or 7% of the learners.
- 3 of the participating organizations contributed fewer than 100 responses.
- There is also a survey for higher education (HE) students, so those results can be found on the 2022/23 HE students' report page.
- Jisc's service offers data to inform choices, evidence improvements, and demonstrate return on investment.
- Participants gain access to their own data for assessment, as well as benchmarking data.
Key Findings
- Most learners used digital technologies for learning both on and off campus.
- Colleges provide good online learning environments in general.
- Digital and data inequity is a growing problem, as many learners lack suitable devices or safe places to work.
- Internet issues, especially wifi, have worsened since the last survey and are more problematic on campus.
- Learner preferences vary, so organizations should continue offering diverse experiences with digital technology.
- Colleges should assess and improve support for digital skills development.
- Just over half the learners agreed guidance about required digital skills was provided.
- Most reported they had not received help in a wide range of digital competency areas, including online platforms and basic IT skills.
- Greater transparency is needed of how learner data is used
- Learners are positive about enabling tech.
- Colleges can provide a more supportive environment.
Methodology
Question Set
- The core question set had 36 questions.
- 4 questions were open ended.
- Sub-questions brought the individual questions to a maximum of 57.
- All questions were optional.
- Most questions were locked to allow benchmark comparisons.
- Organizations could customize additional questions.
- Closed-ended questions had a non-response rate of 7.7% or less, with a median of 4.5%.
Qualitative Open-Ended Questions
- All qualitative open-ended questions were analyzed using semi-supervised topic modelling with NLP (Natural language Processing).
- The CorEx algorithm in Python with anchor terms was used.
- The algorithm classified responses according to survey topics.
- Analysts developed narratives with visualization tools.
Uses and Limitations of Data
- Data is not weighted to match the national FE learner population.
- Comparisons at the level of individual percentage points are not advised.
- Questions and answer options have changed slightly over the years.
- Different organizations participate each year.
- Direct comparisons warrant caution, even with the same question wording.
- Response numbers may exceed the number of people due to "tick all that apply" questions, so percentages may total above 100%. Totals may not reach 100% due to rounding. Null responses are excluded.
