    Study Notes

    Diencephalon

    • Developed from Prosencephalon, located below the cerebral cortex and above the midbrain
    • Forms the central core of the forebrain, composed largely of grey matter
    • Grey matter areas enclose the third ventricle

    Components of Diencephalon

    • Thalamus (80% of diencephalon, paired egg-shaped structure)
    • Hypothalamus (forms the floor of the diencephalon)
    • Epithalamus (includes Pineal Gland, various small nuclei outside thalamus and hypothalamus)

    Thalamus

    • Composed of 12 nuclei (grey matter areas) with functional speciality
    • Receives afferent impulses from all senses and parts of the body, sorts and edits information
    • Relays impulse to appropriate sensory cortex and specific cortical association area
    • Important for sensory integration, motor activities, cortical arousal, learning, and memory

    Functions of Thalamus

    • General somatic sensory receptors (touch, pressure, pain)
    • Visual and auditory relay centers (lateral and medial geniculate body)
    • Regulation of emotions and visceral functions

    Hypothalamus

    • Forms the floor of the diencephalon, weighs approximately 7 grams
    • Regulates homeostasis, controlled by ANS, endocrine system, and limbic system
    • Initiates physical responses to emotions, controls visceral functions, maintains body temperature
    • Involved in emotional behavior, hunger, thirst, sleep-awake cycle, and visceral control

    Epithalamus

    • Includes Pineal Gland, produces melatonin, regulates day-night cycle and sleep-awake cycle
    • Pineal gland is a dorsal portion of the diencephalon, forms roof of third ventricle, and extends from the posterior border of the epithalamus

    Functions of Pineal Gland

    • Regulates day-night cycle, synchronizes body's internal biological clock with external environment
    • Secretes melatonin, which decreases with high sunlight levels and increases with low light levels
