Transverse colon: Segment of the large intestine that runs horizontally across the abdomen, connecting the ascending colon to the descending colon. It plays a role in the absorption of water and electrolytes.
Illeum: The final section of the small intestine that connects to the cecum of the large intestine. It is responsible for the absorption of nutrients, especially vitamin B12 and bile salts.
Ascending colon: The portion of the large intestine that travels upward on the right side of the abdomen. It absorbs remaining water and any nutrients from the digested material.
Cecum: A pouch-like structure that is the beginning of the large intestine. It receives chyme from the ileum and is connected to the appendix.
Rectum: The final section of the large intestine, serving as a temporary storage site for feces before it is expelled from the body through the anus.
Anal canal: The terminal part of the gastrointestinal tract, where feces exit the body. It features internal and external anal sphincters that help control bowel movements.
Sigmoid colon: The S-shaped last part of the colon, leading into the rectum. It stores fecal wastes until they are ready to be expelled.
Descending colon: The segment of the colon that moves downward on the left side of the abdomen. It continues the absorption process and transitions into the sigmoid colon.
