Study Notes
Diagnostic Procedures
Amniocentesis
- Analysis of fluid from the sac surrounding the fetus to detect abnormalities in the fetus
- Procedure involves removing fluid by a needle inserted through the abdominal wall
Arteriography (Angiography)
- X-ray study using radiopaque dye injected through a thin tube (catheter) to detect blockage or defect in an artery
- Commonly used to examine arteries in the brain, heart, kidneys, aorta, or legs
Audiometry
- Assessment of the ability to hear and distinguish sounds at specific pitches and volumes using headphones
- Examines the ears
Auscultation
- Listening with a stethoscope for abnormal heart sounds
- Examines the heart
Barium X-ray Studies
- X-ray study to detect ulcers, tumors, or other abnormalities in the esophagus, stomach, intestine, or rectum
- Uses radiopaque dye to visualize the digestive tract
Biopsy
- Removal and examination of a tissue sample under a microscope to check for cancer or another abnormality
- Can be used to examine any tissue in the body
Blood Pressure Measurement
- Test for high or low blood pressure, usually using an inflatable cuff wrapped around the arm
- Examines the arm (usually)
Blood Tests
- Measurement of substances in the blood to evaluate organ function and diagnose/monitor disorders
- Usually involves a blood sample from an arm
Bone Marrow Aspiration
- Removal of a bone marrow sample by a needle for examination under a microscope to check for abnormalities in blood cells
- Examines the hipbone or breastbone
Bronchoscopy
- Direct examination with a viewing tube to check for a tumor or other abnormality in the airways of the lungs
Cardiac Catheterization
- Study of heart function and structure using a catheter inserted into a blood vessel and threaded to the heart
Chorionic Villus Sampling
- Removal of a sample from the placenta for examination under a microscope to check for abnormalities in the fetus
Chromosomal Analysis
- Examination under a microscope to detect a genetic disorder or to determine a fetus's sex
- Examines blood from the mother
Colonoscopy
- Direct examination with a viewing tube to check for a tumor or other abnormality in the large intestine
Colposcopy
- Direct examination of the cervix with a magnifying lens to check for abnormalities
Computed Tomography (CT)
- Computer-enhanced x-ray study to detect structural abnormalities in any part of the body
Cone Biopsy
- Removal and examination of a cone-shaped piece of tissue from the cervix using a heated wire loop or a laser
- Examines the cervix
Culture
- Growth and examination of microorganisms from a sample to identify infection with bacteria or fungi
- Can be used to examine any area of the body (usually a fluid sample)
Dilation and Curettage (D and C)
- Examination of a sample from the cervix and uterus under a microscope to check for abnormalities in the uterine lining
- Uses a small, sharp instrument (curet)
...and so on for the rest of the procedures.
