    Deviance, Crime & Social Control

    • Deviance is an act that breaks contextual, social, or cultural norms.
    • Deviance can be relative or situational, depending on the context and individual.
    • Deviance doesn't always mean breaking the law. For example, acts of courage might be considered deviant but not necessarily bad.
    • Marijuana has historically been seen as deviant within the United States:
      • In the past, marijuana was not illegal or heavily controlled in the U.S.
      • With the arrival of immigrants from Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, marijuana use was associated with deviant behavior.
      • This led to the criminalization of marijuana and the War on Drugs.
      • Now, with changes in public opinion and acceptance by figures of power, marijuana is being legalized for medical and recreational use in many states.
    • LGBTQ people and relationships:
      • Same-sex intimacy and sexual acts were criminalized by all states in the U.S. until the 1960s and 1970s.
      • Such criminalization remained in some states until 2003 when the Supreme Court ruled against it.
      • Laws prohibiting individuals from dressing in a way that didn't align with their assigned sex at birth also existed and contributed to discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.
      • These laws and institutional discrimination led to mistreatment and violations of rights:
        • Gay men who served in WWII were dishonorably discharged, denying them essential benefits and career opportunities.
        • LGBTQ people were targeted by counterintelligence for being potentially subversive to national security, even though not illegal.
    • LGBTQ relationships are currently legalized.
