Characteristics of Performance Tasks
- Engage students in meaningful learning and require demonstration of important knowledge and skills
- Address 21st-century skills, including critically analyzing and synthesizing information
- Include multiple approaches and allow for demonstration of complex processes
- Focus on the essence of the task and require scoring that measures student understanding and proficiency
- Are feasible for the school/classroom environment
Importance of Performance Tasks
- Engage students in meaningful learning
- Gather evidence about what students can do with their knowledge
- Enable teachers to gauge student understanding and proficiency with complex processes
GRASPS Model
- A guide to developing authentic performance tasks
- Components: Goal, Role, Audience, Situation, Products, Standards (GRASPS)
Components of GRASPS
- GOAL: The purpose of the product or objective of the solution to the problem in the scenario or case
- ROLE: The real-life professional or worker who develops or provides the answer
- AUDIENCE: The group that will be viewing, using or benefitting from the output
- SITUATION: The setting or the scenario and the problem, issue, or challenge people face
- PRODUCT/PERFORMANCE: The output done by the professional/worker that answers the problem or goal
- STANDARDS: The criteria (also stated in a rubric) that will be used to assess the product
Criteria for Designing Performance Tasks
- Integrate knowledge and skills across multiple content standards or within a content area
- Measure capacities such as depth of understanding, research skills, complex analysis, and identification/providing of relevant evidence
- Require student-initiated planning, management of information and ideas, and interaction with other materials
- Require production of extended responses, such as oral presentations, exhibitions, and other scorable products
Example of GRASPS
- GOAL: To showcase Grade 4 students’ skills and talents in the English Expressive Language
- ROLE: English Teachers of Grade 4 students
- AUDIENCE: Students and Visitors
- SITUATION: The City Central School’s 113th Foundation Day is fast approaching and one of its activities is to conduct a live talk show
- PRODUCT/PERFORMANCE: 30-minute live talk show
- STANDARDS: Each section’s presentation will be evaluated based on the phonological skills and fluency the presenters are able to showcase
