Descriptive Statistics

Definition Descriptive statistics involves summarizing and describing the basic features of a dataset.

Measures of Central Tendency Used to describe the middle value of a dataset.

Mode: the value that appears most frequently in the dataset
Median: the middle value in the dataset when it is arranged in order
Mean: the average value of the dataset

Measures of Variability Used to describe the spread or dispersion of a dataset.

Range: the difference between the largest and smallest values in the dataset
Interquartile Range (IQR): the difference between the 75th percentile and the 25th percentile
Variance: the average of the squared differences from the mean
Standard Deviation (SD): the square root of the variance

Data Visualization Used to visually describe and summarize the dataset.

Histograms: a graphical representation of the distribution of a continuous variable
Box Plots: a graphical representation of the distribution of a continuous variable, showing the median, quartiles, and outliers
Scatter Plots: a graphical representation of the relationship between two continuous variables
