Human Rights

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to all people, regardless of their nationality, sex, ethnicity, religion, or any other status. They are the principles that recognize the inherent dignity and value of every person, ensuring that everyone has the freedom to make choices and develop their potential. Human rights are universal, meaning they apply to every person, without any distinction.

What Are Human Rights?

Human rights include civil and political rights, such as the right to life, liberty, and privacy, and economic, social, and cultural rights, including the rights to education, health, and adequate housing. They protect individuals from torture, discrimination, and mistreatment by the state. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted in 1948, is the foundation for international human rights law.

Who is Responsible for Protecting Human Rights?

Individuals have a responsibility to exercise their rights in consideration of others' rights. Governments have a particular responsibility to establish and maintain laws and services that enable people to enjoy their rights.

How Human Rights Help You

Human rights protect you in many areas of your daily life, including the right to express your opinions, receive an education, maintain privacy, and be free from mistreatment by the state. They ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, is treated equally and with dignity.

Where Human Rights Come From

The idea of human rights has deep roots in Britain, with landmark developments such as the Magna Carta, the Habeas Corpus Act, and the Bill of Rights. The UDHR was the first attempt to set out at a global level the fundamental rights and freedoms shared by all human beings. The European Convention on Human Rights, adopted in 1950, protects the human rights of people in countries that belong to the Council of Europe.

The Human Rights Act 1998

The Human Rights Act 1998 made the rights set out by the European Convention on Human Rights part of domestic law in the UK, allowing courts to hear human rights cases.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The UDHR is a document that acts as a global roadmap for freedom and equality, outlining 30 rights and freedoms that belong to all of us. It was the first international agreement to establish basic human rights and freedoms, and it continues to be the most translated document in the world.

The Future of Human Rights

The UDHR challenges us to resist attacks against rights, disrupt the building of world orders that reproduce historical privileges and injustices, and transform global governance by re-imagining, innovating, and leading. It demands bold, visionary leadership, institutions, and systems to protect our planet for future generations.

Explora los conceptos fundamentales de los derechos humanos, incluyendo su origen, la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos y la responsabilidad de protegerlos.
