Study Notes

Oral Health

  • Dry socket is more likely to occur when a blood clot does not form due to overirrigation of the tooth socket.
  • To prevent pulp tissue thermal damage during ultrasonic scaling, use constant irrigation.
  • Feline external odontoclastic resorptive lesions are also known as neck lesions on feline teeth.

Veterinary Anatomy

  • The dental formula for the permanent teeth in the dog is 2 (I 3/3, C 1/1, P 4/4, M 3/2).
  • Using the triadan system, the cat's first lower right molar is described as 407.

Virology

  • Infections with the distemper virus are often fatal in unvaccinated ferrets.

Reptile Care

  • It is safe to collect 5% of the circulating blood volume in reptiles.
  • Most reptiles require ultraviolet light to produce vitamin D.

Anesthesia

  • A gerbil should not be fasted prior to anesthesia due to their high metabolic rate.

Parasitology

  • Onchocerca parasites produce microfilaria, which cause patchy alopecia and depigmentation.
  • Toxocara, Paragonimus, and Dipetalonema parasites use snails as intermediate hosts.
  • Sarcocystis is not a zoonotic parasite.

Pharmacy

  • Guaifenesin is an expectorant.
  • Dextromethorphan is an over-the-counter antitussive.
  • Butorphanol tartrate is an analgesic and antitussive.
  • Antibiotics are the drug group of choice for treating Lyme disease.

Urinalysis

  • For a cast to form, protein must be present in the filtrate.
  • Oxalate is the most common crystal found in canine urinary sediment.
  • Urine specific gravity measures tubule function.

Parasitology

  • Ascarid ova resemble strongyle ova in horses.
  • Stomach bots are not found in ruminants.

Note: I have organized the notes into categories (e.g., Oral Health, Veterinary Anatomy, etc.) to make them easier to review and study.

Oral Tetracyclines and Diet

  • Oral tetracyclines should not be administered with a high calcium diet.

Epithelial Cells in Urine Sediment

  • Squamous cells are the smallest epithelial cells seen on a urine sediment examination.

Cast Formation

  • Protein must be present in the filtrate for a cast to form.

Urinary Crystals in Canines

  • The most common crystal found in canine urinary sediment is oxalate.

Urine Specific Gravity

  • Urine specific gravity is a measure of tubule function.

Parasite Ova in Small Animals

  • Ascarid ova resemble strongyle ova in horses.

Stomach Bots in Ruminants

  • Bots are found in the nasal passages of ruminants.

Viral Infections in Ferrets

  • Infections with the distemper virus are often fatal in unvaccinated ferrets.

Blood Collection in Reptiles

  • It is safe to collect 5% of the circulating blood volume in reptiles.

Ultraviolet Light in Reptiles

  • Most reptiles require ultraviolet light to produce vitamin D.

Anesthesia in Gerbils

  • Gerbils should not be fasted prior to anesthesia due to their high metabolic rate.
