Study Notes
Dental Polishing
- Dental polishing is a procedure for removing plaque and stains from teeth.
- It's a common method for stain removal.
- Polishing utilizes a handpiece, rubber cup, and abrasive agent.
- The process involves patient preparation including medical history check, contraindications, draping, appliance removal, and protective eyewear.
- The patient should be educated on the procedure, and questions answered.
- The equipment used in conventional polishing includes polishing handpiece, rubber cup, polishing paste, gauze, and floss.
- Different types of abrasives are available, from extra-coarse to extra-fine.
- The greater the amount of agent used, the more abrasive the result will be.
- The lighter the pressure and slower the rotation speed, the less abrasion.
- The fulcrum must be positioned for wrist and forearm movement, and may be intraoral or extraoral.
- Stains can be extrinsic (surface) or intrinsic (within the tooth).
- Extrinsic stains can be removed by polishing.
- Proper polishing strokes involve starting from the gingival third towards the incisal third, using light pressure and a patting/wiping motion.
- An important tool is establishing a finger rest and placing the cup almost in contact with the tooth.
- Dental polishing uses slow speed; the cup must be lightly applied for 1-2 seconds.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Students should define the polishing procedure.
- They should describe the benefits of any polishing modality.
- Discuss conventional polishing equipment.
- Demonstrate proper patient preparation strategies.
- Demonstrate safe clinical practice when polishing.
- Show proficiency in assessing the polish quality and offering advice to prevent future stains.
GDC Learning Outcomes 2013
- Describe oral diseases and their relevance to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Recognize oral cavity and patient abnormalities, raising concerns where necessary.
- Understand and manage risks in the clinical environment safely and efficiently.
- Advise on and apply preventive materials and treatments as appropriate.
- Undertake non-surgical treatments (under prescription) to remove stains using relevant methods.
Assessment
- Formative assessment includes quizzes, practical demonstrations, and class discussions.
- Summative assessment is based on the FCSP handbook.
Recall Dental Stains Lecture
- Stains adhere to teeth directly, within hard or soft deposits, or within the tooth structure.
- Stains are classified as extrinsic (surface) or intrinsic (within the tooth).
- Extrinsic stains are removable by the operator.
Benefits of Polishing
- Polishing creates a smoother tooth surface for easier cleaning.
- Patients are more likely to cooperate and maintain oral hygiene themselves once teeth are polished.
- Polishing slows down the formation of new dental deposits.
- Fluoride is better absorbed by enamel after polishing.
Main ways of polishing
- Conventional polishing uses handpieces and abrasive agents.
- Air-flow polishing utilizes a different, specialized equipment.
Safety in Polishing
- It's crucial to check the patient's medical history for contraindications before starting the process.
- Use appropriate protection (e.g., bib, eyewear) for both patient and operator.
