    Study Notes

Connectors in Fixed Partial Dentures (FPDs)

    • Connectors are parts of a fixed partial denture (FPD) or splint that join individual retainers and pontics together.
    • There are two types of connectors: rigid (fixed) and non-rigid (flexible).
    • Tissue surface of connectors must be highly polished and curved facio-lingually to facilitate cleansing and prevent plaque accumulation.
    • Connectors should be placed as lingually and incisally as possible for self-cleansing.
    • The depth of a connector should always be sufficient to provide adequate strength.

    Soldering Gap Width

    • As gap width increases, soldering accuracy decreases.
    • Extremely small gap widths can prevent proper solder flow and lead to an incomplete or weak joint.
    • An even soldering gap of about 0.25 mm is recommended.

    Soldering of Post Ceramic

    • Post ceramic soldering should be done after ceramic firing.
    • Ceramic portions should be finished only after soldering.

    Advantages of Soldering

    • Good access to finish the margins on both the wax pattern and the casting prior to soldering.

    Loop Connectors

    • Loop connectors are rarely used and are used when the existence of diastema is to be maintained in planned fixed prosthesis.
