It is usually prominent with a tendency toward deep developmental grooves
Study Notes
Maxillary Lateral Incisor
- Located second from the median line, supplements the maxillary central incisor in function
- Smaller than the maxillary central incisor in all dimensions except root length
- Root is usually as long as the maxillary central incisor, but not as thick
Principle Identifying Features
- Crown is more rounded, shorter, and narrower mesio-distally than the maxillary central incisor
- Mesio-incisal angle is acute and disto-incisal angle is more rounded
- Single root with a tapered, distally curved, pointed apex
- Lingual fossa is more concave than that of the maxillary central incisor
Labial Aspect
- Crown is shorter and narrower than the maxillary central incisor, but root is as long or longer
- Labial surface of the crown is more convex than that of the maxillary central incisor
- Mesial outline resembles that of the maxillary central incisor with a more rounded mesio-incisal angle
- Distal outline is more rounded with the crest of curvature at the center of the middle third
- Root tapers evenly and curves distally at the apex
Lingual Aspect
- Mesial and distal marginal ridges are marked
- Cingulum is usually prominent with a tendency towards deep developmental grooves within the lingual fossa
- Lingual fossa is more concave and circumscribed than that found on the maxillary central incisor
- Tooth tapers towards the lingual resembling a maxillary central incisor
- Deep developmental groove at the side of the cingulum, usually on the distal side, may extend up on the root
Mesial Aspect
- Crown is narrower labio-lingually than the maxillary central incisor
- Curvature of the cervical line is less than that of the maxillary central incisor
- Root appears as a tapered cone, and a line bisecting the root bisects the incisal ridge, which is well developed
Distal Aspect
- Curvature of the cervical line distally is less than that mesially
- Developmental groove extending to the root may be present
Incisal Aspect
- Resembles the maxillary central incisor, but with a larger cingulum and incisal ridge
- Labio-lingual to mesio-distal measurement is larger, resembling a small canine
- Exhibits more convexity labially and lingually
Variations from the Typical Form (Anomalies)
- Peg-shaped lateral incisor with a thin root and small conical crown
- May be congenitally missing
- Large developmental groove on the palatal aspect extending to the root (palatogingival groove, palatoradicular groove)
Main Differences between Maxillary Central and Lateral Incisor
- Crown size and shape: maxillary central incisor is longer and wider, while maxillary lateral incisor is shorter and narrower
- Root size and shape: maxillary central incisor is shorter with a cone-shaped blunt apex, while maxillary lateral incisor is longer with a tapered, pointed apex
