    Study Notes

Morphology of Deciduous Maxillary and Mandibular Posterior Teeth

    Maxillary 1st Molar

    • Morphologically considered a model for the permanent 1st maxillary molar, allowing prediction of its structure
    • Characteristics: bicusped tooth, cervical constriction, cervical 1/3 bulging, little root trunk, and roots that are thinner and divergent
    • Buccal aspect: MD diameter is greater than crown height, M part is higher occlusally than D, and marked cervical constriction
    • Mesial aspect: mesial marginal groove, buccal cervical ridge more prominent than in 2nd molars, and roots are strongly divergent
    • Occlusal aspect: trapezoidal, M and D profiles are straight and slightly lingually convergent, and triangular supplemental grooves

    Mandibular 1st Molar

    • Morphologically considered a model for the permanent 1st mandibular molar, allowing prediction of its structure
    • Characteristics: 4-cusped tooth, cervical constriction, cervical 1/3 bulging, little root trunk, and roots that are thinner and divergent
    • Lingual aspect: 2 cusps (ML and DL), ML cusp is conical and larger than DL
    • Mesial aspect: buccal cervical ridge, transverse ridge connecting MB and ML, and mesial marginal groove separates M MR from ML cusp ridge
    • Distal aspect: all 4 cusps and M root profiles are visible, B profile is less bulging than from mesial aspect
    • Occlusal aspect: rectangular, without buccal cervical ridge, and M MR is high and prominent

    Deciduous Posterior Teeth

    • Sizes and eruption ages:
      • 54 or 64: 5.1 mm crown height, 7.3 mm MD diameter, 8.5 mm BL diameter, 15.2 mm tooth length, erupts at 12-16 months
      • 55 or 65: 5.7 mm crown height, 8.2 mm MD diameter, 10.0 mm BL diameter, 17.5 mm tooth length, erupts at 20-30 months
      • 84 or 74: 6.0 mm crown height, 7.7 mm MD diameter, 7.0 mm BL diameter, 15.8 mm tooth length, erupts at 12-16 months
      • 85 or 75: 5.5 mm crown height, 9.9 mm MD diameter, 8.7 mm BL diameter, 18.8 mm tooth length, erupts at 20-30 months
