    • Culture is the way of life of a group of people, manifested through material objects, beliefs, and practices
    • Culture is shaped by symbols, language, norms, values, and beliefs

    Components of Culture

    • Symbols - anything with meaning that is understood by people within the same culture
    • Language - a system of symbols that enables communication among people
      • Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis (linguistic determinism) - holds that people see and understand the world through the cultural lens of language
    • Norms - expected behavior and established rules in society
      • Mores - norms that are widely observed and have great moral significance
      • Taboo - strongly forbidden practices
      • Folkways - norms for routine or casual interaction

    Types of Culture

    • Material Culture - physical things created by members of society
    • Nonmaterial Culture - ideas and other non-physical things created by the members of the society

    Dominant Culture

    • Refers to the established language, religion, values, rituals, and social customs that are often the norm for society as a whole
