Defending and Escaping from a Front Chokehold
- Purpose: Break free from a subject grabbing you around the throat from the front.
- Procedure:
- Use loud, clear verbal commands.
- Tuck chin and shrug shoulders.
- Step back with right leg, raise left arm to swing over subject's arm to break the hold (windmill).
- Follow up with appropriate actions.
- Other escapes include pressure to the jugular notch and evasive movements.
Defending and Escaping from a Rear Chokehold
- Purpose: Escape a surprise attack or struggle with a combative subject. Escape is crucial for preventing serious injury or unconsciousness.
- Procedure:

- Tuck chin and shrug shoulders.
- Lower center of gravity and raise choking side arm.
