Study Notes
Defense Mechanisms
- Idealization: Exaggerated positive qualities are attributed to others to cope with emotional conflict or stress.
- Pseudo-altruism: Meeting the needs of others to deal with internal or external stressors, gaining vicarious or responsive gratification.
- Reaction formation: Unacceptable thoughts/feelings are replaced with their opposite. Typically occurs along with repression.
- Undoing: Actions or words to negate or symbolically atone for unacceptable thoughts/feelings/actions.
- Acting out: Dealing with conflict through actions rather than reflection or feelings. Broader than transference examples in therapy.
- Autistic fantasy: Intense daydreaming as a substitute for real-life relationships or problem-solving.
- Denial: Refusal to acknowledge a painful aspect of reality, whether external or internal. Gross denial is significant impairment in reality testing.
- Devaluation: Exaggerated negative qualities attributed to self or others.
- Displacement: Transferring feelings/responses, usually from a threatening object to a less threatening one.
- Dissociation: Breakdown in integrated functions of consciousness, memory, perception, self, or sensory/motor behavior.
- Isolation: Separation of ideas from feelings, leading to a loss of connection.
Additional Defense Mechanisms
- Passive aggression: Indirect expression of aggression through unassertive, often seemingly compliant, behavior.
- Projection: Attributing one's own unacceptable feelings/impulses to others.
- Rationalization: Creating plausible explanations for unacceptable behaviors or feelings, concealing true motivations.
- Splitting: Compartmentalizing opposite affect/states, unable to integrate positive and negative qualities of oneself or others.
- Affiliation: Seeking support and connection with others.
- Altruism: Dealing with stressors through dedication to helping others.
- Anticipation: Addressing stressors by realistically planning for future events and considering their associated feelings and consequences.
- Sublimation: Channeling impulses into acceptable and socially productive activities.
