4 TYPES OF TRUNK MUSCLES
- VERTEBRAL COLUMN 2. THORAX 3. ABDOMINAL WALL 4. PELVIC DIAPHRAGM AND PERINEUM
THORACIC MUSCLES
THORACIC MUSCLES
involved almost entirely in breathing ✓ EXTERNAL INTERCOSTALS - elevator ribs during respiration ✓ INTERNAL INTERCOSTALS - depressed the ribs during forced expiration ✓ DIAPHRAGM - "dome-shaped" - major movement into rocks during quiet breathing - contracts - flattened

Study Notes
Neck Muscles
- Neck flexors originate at anterior vertebrae
- Neck extensors originate at posterior vertebrae
- Sternocleidomastoid is the prime mover of lateral muscle, visible on anterior and lateral sides
Trunk Muscles
Vertebral Column Muscles
- Erector spinae muscles are responsible for keeping the body straight and erect
- Deep back muscles are located between spinous and transverse processes, responsible for several movements of the vertebral column (extension, flexion, and rotation)
Thoracic Muscles
- External intercostals are elevator muscles that elevate ribs during respiration
- Internal intercostals are depressor muscles that depress ribs during forced expiration
- Diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that contracts and flattens during quiet breathing
Abdominal Wall Muscles
- Linea alba consists of white connective tissue rather than muscle
- Rectus abdominis muscle is located on each side of the linea alba
