Investing Layer
Investing Layer
The outermost layer of the deep cervical fascia that surrounds the neck like a collar.
Pretracheal Fascia
Pretracheal Fascia
The middle layer of the deep cervical fascia, anterior to the visceral compartment of the neck.
Horizontal Extent of Pretracheal Fascia

Study Notes
- The deep cervical fascia includes the investing layer, pre-tracheal layer, pre-vertebral layer, and carotid sheath.
Investing Layer
- Located superficially, it encircles the neck like a collar.
- Positioned deep to the skin, superficial fascia, and platysma.
Pre-tracheal Fascia
- It sits deep to the infrahyoid muscles, anterior to the neck's visceral compartment.
- Horizontally, it spans from the front of one carotid sheath to the opposite, splitting to enclose the thyroid gland.
- Through the ligament of Berry, it binds the thyroid gland to the larynx.
- The ligament of Berry prevents the thyroid from slipping into the thorax and enables its movement during swallowing.
Prevertebral Fascia
- It creates a tubular sheath for the vertebral column and its associated muscles.
- Situated in front of the prevertebral muscles.
- Located posterior to the visceral compartment, which contains the trachea and esophagus in the neck.
Carotid Sheath
- It encloses the common carotid and internal carotid arteries, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve.
Retropharyngeal Space
- It is the neck's largest and most significant inter-fascial space.
- A potential space made of loose connective tissue.
- Positioned between the buccopharyngeal fascia anteriorly and the alar fascia posteriorly.
- The alar fascia represents an anterior extension of the prevertebral fascia.
Danger Space
- An area of delicate, loose connective tissue resides between the alar fascia and the prevertebral fascia.
- It's termed the danger space because it stretches downwards to T12 and the diaphragm.
- It can potentially connect with the peritoneum.
- Infections may arise from a posterior rupture of a retropharyngeal abscess.
