    Study Notes

    DDM Basics

    • DDM stands for Dribble Drive Motion, a basketball offensive system.
    • The system is divided into different zones: Break Down Zone, Rack Zone, Drop Zone, and Drag Zone.

    Court Zones

    • Break Down Zone: where the 1 or 5 is looking to see what the defense is giving, and they will make their reads here.
    • Rack Zone: where the goal is to make lay-ups or get fouled to shoot free throws.
    • Drop Zone: if the player can't beat their man, they will play out of this area, with many options to go to.
    • Drag Zone: if the player beats their man initially, but is stopped before they can rack it, they will hit the 3 or the 5 with a skip or kick out pass.

    Initial Set-up

    • 1 and 5 are point guards, looking to drive first and shoot second.
    • 2 and 3 are shooters first and drivers second, with 2 usually being the better shooter.
    • 4 runs rim to rim, setting up opposite the ball to create lanes to the basket.

    Rack Zone Options

    • Rack 2: 1 drives the ball and shoots a lay-up, 2 stays patient in the corner, 3 drags to the open window on the weak side, and 4 is in clean-up position.
    • Rack 2 Dump: 1 drives the ball to the Rack Zone, 2 stays patient in the corner, 3 drags to the open window on the back side, and 4 is in clean-up position and receives the pass from 1.
    • Rack 3: 1 penetrates the middle going to his left, 5 kicks back, and 1 passes the Drop Zone, 4 relocates to the block opposite the drive, and 3 stays patient in the corner.
    • Rack 3 Dump: 1 will dump the ball to the 4 for a lay-up.

    Drag Zone Options

    • Drag 3: 1 drives past the Drop Zone, but can't Rack It, hits the 3 man dragging to the open window on the weak side, and then cuts to the ball side corner.
    • Drag 3 Shoot: 3 will shoot it or Rack It.
    • Drag 3 Kick: 1 drives past the Drop Zone, but can't Rack It, hits the 5 man dragging in behind him on the drive.
    • Drag 3 Kick Shoot: 5 will either shoot the 3-point shot or Rack It.

    Drop Zone Options

    • Drop 2 Back Door: 1 is trying to take his guy off of the dribble, but is stopped in the Drop Zone, 3 stays in the dead corner, 4 is T'd Up at the FT line, and 5 is being patient.
    • Drop 2 Kick Up: 1 is trying to take his guy off of the dribble, but is stopped in the Drop Zone, 3 is elevating to the open window, 4 is T'd Up at the FT line, and 5 is being patient.
    • Drop 2 T Up: 1 is trying to take his guy off of the dribble, but is stopped in the Drop Zone, 3 is elevating to the open window, 4 is T'd Up at the FT line, and 5 is being patient.

    Drop 3 Options

    • Drop 3 Back Door: same action as Drop 2, just to the 3 side.
    • Drop 3 T Up: same action as Drop 2, just to the 3 side.
    • Drop 3 T Up Cont: 5 has to drag all the way to the opposite corner, 3 has to drag to behind 4, 2 has to drag to the window, and 1 stays patient in the opposite corner.

    Kick Back

    • Kick Back: 1 will drive middle and pass the ball back to the 5 man, making sure the pass is positive, meaning we pass the ball after the 5 man has gotten past our 1.
    • Kick Back to a Drop 2 Back Door: 5 receives the pass, drives to the Drop Zone, 2 elevates 2 steps and goes backdoor if denied, 4 is T'd Up to the FT line, and 3 is patient in his corner.
    • Kick Back to a Drop 3 Back Door: same action as Drop 2, just to the 3 side.### DDM Basics
    • The Kick Back Series involves a series of plays to create scoring opportunities.
    • In the Kick Back play, 2 should rack the ball, but could pass to 4 or 3 if the lay-up isn't there.
    • If 2 passes to 3, 3 needs to be in a position to receive the pass, usually getting low in the corner.

    DDM Basics (continued)

    • The Kick Back to a rack involves 1 running a kick back with 5.
    • 1 will replace 5 and then drag behind the drive.
    • 3 looks for an open window on the weak side, while 2 elevates 2 steps and 4 is in a clean-up position waiting for dump or offensive rebound opportunities.

    Daily 45 Drills

    • The 5 Spot Shooting drill involves shooting from 5 spots on the floor (right and left baseline, right and left elbow extended, top of the key).
    • Each player has 4 minutes to make 10 baskets from each spot, moving on to the next spot after completing the previous one.
    • The goal is to score in the positive, making more than 50 baskets.

    Daily 45 Drills (continued)

    • The Cardinal drill is a continuous 2 on 1 drill.
    • 2 lines are formed at each sideline at half court, with 1 man on defense under the basket and 1 man in each corner out of bounds on the baseline.
    • The drill starts with one of the offensive players dribbling the ball at the defense, trying to get to the "RACK".
    • If the defender is "in your lane", pass the ball; if the defender is "out of your lane", keep going to the rack until he gets "in your lane".

    Daily 45 Drills (continued)

    • Upon completion of the 2 on 1 break, the man who shot the basket (make or miss) or turnover must sprint back to half court and touch the coach's hand, then sprint back and play defense.
    • The man who gets the rebound, steal, etc. will immediately outlet the ball to the closest man standing in one of the baseline corners.
    • The players at half court can't leave too early, staying until they receive the pass.

    Daily 45 Drills (continued)

    • The Scramble drill is a 3 on 2 full court drill.
    • Start the drill at half court with 3 on 2, with outlets lining up at each side top of key extended (out of bounds on the side).
    • The outlet will "banana cut" from top of key extended toward the middle of the floor and receive an outlet from the rebounder.
    • The outlet will blowout dribble and pass ahead if someone is ahead, and the 3 will then go down on a 3 on 2.

    Daily 45 Drills (continued)

    • The Blood 11 drill is a continuous 1 on 1 full court drill.
    • Teams are split up into two teams, with the player on defense unable to leave until the offense player enters the center circle.
    • The game is played to 8 points, with only layups allowed, each basket worth 2 points.

    Daily 45 Drills (continued)

    • The Texas 111 drill involves 3 players on the court at all times.
    • The setup includes a defensive player with the ball at the half circle, an offensive player waiting to receive the ball at the FT line, and a defensive chaser coming from the baseline.
    • The defensive player at the half court line throws the ball to the offensive player at the FT line, and the defensive chaser must stay in the jump circle until the offensive player reaches him.

    Daily 45 Drills (continued)

    • The Texas 111 drill continues with the offensive player attacking the basket, and the defensive player becoming the chaser.
    • It becomes a 1 on 1 drill with a chaser, played until a defensive rebound or turnover.
    • Then it becomes a 2 on 1 on the way back, with the person who was on offense now on defense, and the person who was on defense trying to score again.

    Daily 45 Drills (continued)

    • The Texas 22 drill is similar to the Texas 111, but with 2 offensive players.
    • It starts as a 2-1 with a defensive chaser, and the players rotate in after each play.### 3-Man Breakdown Drills
