Target Pass

Basketball Official Rules

  • Sport season runs from December to March
  • Culminating events include District Basketball, State Basketball Finals, and Unified Basketball Finals
  • The roster for Unified teams requires an equal number of traditional athletes and unified partners (at least 4 traditional athletes and 3 unified partners). Unified partners are athletes and should not be involved in coaching roles. Assistant coaches can be on the team roster and play.
  • Uniforms must be identical in color and design, with numbers on the front and back of each jersey. Unified athletes will have even numbers and their partners odd numbers.
  • Allowed equipment includes hats, bandanas, du-rags, jewelry, and denim may not be worn during games or practice. Headbands, wristbands, and arm sleeves are acceptable. Headwear for religious or medical reasons are acceptable, but documentation must be submitted to the state office before the event. Traditional basketball shoes should be worn.
  • For male athletes 12 years and older, a size 7 (29.5 inch) basketball is required. For females 12 years and older, a size 6 (28.5 inch) basketball is used. For athletes under 12, a size 5 (27.5 inch) is used.
  • Five individual fouls result in disqualification from the game. Seven team fouls result in a one-and-one bonus (1 Free Throw, if made 2). Ten team fouls result in a double bonus (2 Free Throws). )
  • Separate rules exist for Unified Basketball
  • Individual Skill Contests include Target Pass, Ten-meter Dribble, Spot Shot, and Speed Dribble
  • Event 1 - Target Pass: A 1 meter square is marked on a wall, with the bottom line 1 meter from the floor. A 3 meter square is marked on the floor, 2.4 meters from the wall. Athletes get 5 attempts. Scores for hitting the wall or lines within the square are 3 points and 2 points, respectively. 1 point is awarded for hitting the wall outside the square. 1 point is awarded for catching the ball in the air or any number of bounces. 0 points if the ball bounces prior to hitting the wall.
  • Event 2 - Ten-meter Dribble: Timed for 60 seconds. Dribble needs to be one-handed. Athletes stay within a marked circle. Recovering a dropped ball counts.
  • Event 3 - Spot Shot: Six spots on the floor are marked, starting each measuerement at a spot under the rim. Athletes attempt 2 shots. Spots 1 and 2 = 2 points. Spots 3 and 4= 3 points. Spots 5 and 6 = 4 points
  • Event 4 - Speed Dribble: 60 second time limit for dribbling the basketball. Athletes must stay in a designated circle. Players retrieve a ball that rolls out of the circle.
  • Event 1 - 12 Meter Dribble Level 2 players dribble the ball while passing alternate sides from 2 meter obstacles in a 12 meter line.
  • Event 2 - Perimeter Shooting Level 2: players dribble to the rim for a shot outside the 2.75 meter arc. Athletes must bounce the ball then dribble and attempt the same shot in a timed period.
  • Event 3 - Catch and Pass Level 2: Athletes pass the ball to each other from designated spots in a cone system. Passing to the specified person is accurate. Athletes stay in the designated position until the pass is made.
  • Team Skills - 5 Person Teams: Each player will catch the ball then accurately pass to the next player. Passes must be in numerical order. Players must pass using a bounce pass only once. If an athlete misses the pass, it is up to the official or an athlete to retrieve the ball back to the original position to throw again. If the ball hits the player and misses, they continue throwing. The person at position 5 attempts a field goal when the ball reaches them.
