Study Notes
Data Communications
- Data communication is the exchange of data between devices via transmission media.
- Four essential characteristics:
- Delivery
- Accuracy
- Timeliness
- Jitter
Components of Data Communication
- Five major components include:
- Sender
- Receiver
- Message
- Medium of communication
- Communication protocol
Types of Messages
- Information can be represented in various forms:
- Text, numbers, images, audio, video.
- Text is encoded into bit patterns, with Unicode being the prevalent coding system.
- Numbers are typically converted directly to binary for mathematical operations.
- Images consist of pixel matrices; resolution determines image quality.
- Represented using RGB (Red, Green, Blue) or YCM (Yellow, Cyan, Magenta).
- Audio can be analog or digital signals representing sound.
- Video consists of continuous images or a sequence of images.
Data Flow Modes
- Simplex: Unidirectional communication; one device can send/receive.
- Half-Duplex: Two devices can send/receive, but not simultaneously.
- Full-Duplex: Both devices can communicate simultaneously.
Networks
- A network interconnects devices capable of communication, including hosts (computers, phones) and connecting devices (routers, switches).
Network Criteria
- A network should meet performance, reliability, and security standards.
- Performance indicators include transit time and response time.
- Reliability measures accuracy, frequency of failures, recovery time, and robustness.
- Security concerns protecting data from unauthorized access and loss, along with recovery policies.
Physical Structures
- Networks consist of connections between devices via links.
- Types of connections:
- Point-to-Point: Dedicated link between two devices; capacity reserved for that pair.
- Multipoint: More than two devices share a single link; can be spatially or temporally shared.
Physical Topology
- Refers to the actual physical layout of the network structure.
