    Study Notes

    Data Center Architecture

    • A data center architecture consists of a two-tier hierarchy: leaf nodes and spine (also called backbone)
    • Leaf nodes are where devices and servers (ESXi hosts) connect in
    • Spine interconnects the leaf nodes

Leaf Nodes (Leaf Layer Switches/Top-of-Rack Switches)

    • Each ESXi host has a hypervisor (Type 1) running on blade servers
    • Each hypervisor can run one or more virtual machines (VMs)
    • Logically, each hypervisor has a virtual switch that allows VMs to connect and communicate with each other
    • VMs can communicate with each other on the virtual switch without leaving the hypervisor

    Spine (Backbone)

    • Spine switches interconnect the leaf nodes
    • Each spine switch has connections to every leaf switch, creating a full mesh
    • There are no cross-connections between leaf devices or between backbone devices

    Traffic Flows

    • East-west traffic: traffic between hosts and VMs within the data center (e.g., Host 1 to Host 3)
    • North-south traffic: traffic that leaves the data center (e.g., to the public internet or other networks outside the data center)

    Two-Tier Architecture Benefits

    • Fault tolerance: each device has redundant connections
    • Equidistance: each host is the same number of devices away from every other host
    • Supports a large amount of east-west traffic between hosts and VMs

    Network Analysis

    • Tools like NetFlow can be used to analyze traffic flows and identify major applications and traffic usage
    • Analyzing traffic flows helps understand traffic patterns and optimize data center design

    Storage in Data Centers

    • In most cases, storage is not directly connected to hosts, but is network-accessible
    • Special networks and network architectures are dedicated for storage access over a network
