Dance Terminology
- Arms in Lateral Position: Both arms are extended to one side, at shoulder, chest, or waist level.
- Brush: A step where weight is shifted onto one foot, the other foot hits the floor with the ball or heel, then lifts off in any direction.
- Cabeceras: The couples positioned at the width of the dance floor when dancers are in a square formation.
- Clockwise: Movement in the same direction as the hands on a clock. When facing the center, movement is to the left.
- Counterclockwise: Movement in the opposite direction of clockwise. When facing the center, movement is to the right.
- Costados: The couples positioned at the length of the dance floor when dancers are in a square formation.
- Crossed Arms: Partners stand facing or side by side and clasp their hands together, either right over left or left over right.
- Cut: A quick movement where one foot displaces the other.
- Do-si-do: Partners advance forward, pass each other's right (or left) side, step across to the right (or left), move backward without turning around, and then pass each other's left (or right) side to return to their starting positions.
- Free foot: The foot not supporting the body's weight.
- Free hand: The hand that's not placed or actively being used.
- Hayon-hayon: Placing one forearm in front and the other at the back of the waist.
- Hop: A spring from one foot, landing on the same foot in place or in a different direction.
- Inside foot: The foot closer to the partner when standing side by side.
- Jaleo: Partners turn clockwise (right elbows touching) or counterclockwise (left elbows touching) using walking or other dance steps.
- Jump: A spring from one or both feet, landing on both feet in any direction.
- Kumintang: Moving the hand from the wrist in a circular motion, either clockwise or counterclockwise.
- Leap: A spring from one foot, landing on the other foot in any direction.
- Masiwak: Turning the hand halfway clockwise at the wrist, then raising and lowering the wrist once or twice.
- Outside foot: The foot farther from the partner when standing side by side.
- Outside hand: The hand farther from the partner when standing side by side.
- Panadyak: Stamping with the right foot in front or to the side, then tapping with the same foot close to the left foot.
- Patay: Bending the head downward and supporting the forehead with the right forearm or elbow.
- Place: Placing a foot in a specific position without putting weight on it, with the sole of the foot resting on the floor.
- Pivot: Turning with the ball, heel, or whole foot on a fixed point.
- Point: Touching the floor lightly with the toes of one foot while maintaining weight on the other foot.
- Salok: Swinging the arm downward-upward, passing in front of the body as if scooping. The body bends to follow the arm's movement.
- Saludo: Partners bow to each other, the audience, opposite dancers, or neighbors with feet together.
- Sarok: Crossing the right (or left) foot in front of the left (or right), bending the body slightly forward, and crossing the hand in front of the other.
- Set: A dance formation like a square or unit, composed of two or more pairs.
- Slide: Gliding the foot smoothly along the floor. The movement can be finished with or without a transfer of weight.
- Stamp: Bringing the foot forcibly and noisily on the floor, with or without a transfer of weight.
- Step: Advancing or receding by moving one foot to another resting place, with a complete transfer of weight.
- Supporting foot: The foot that bears the weight of the body.
- Tap: Rapping slightly with the ball or toe of the free foot.
- Whirl: Making fast turns by executing small steps in place to the right or left.
