Study Notes

Radial Nerve

  • The median nerve does not supply the thenar muscles, but rather the lateral aspect of the hand.
  • The superficial branch of the radial nerve supplies the lateral dorsal aspect of the hand.
  • The deep terminal branch of the radial nerve does not supply the brachialis muscle.
  • A common cause of radial nerve compression leading to triceps paralysis is Saturday night palsy.

Radial Nerve Anatomy

  • The deep terminal branch of the radial nerve passes through the supinator muscle to reach the posterior compartment of the forearm.
  • The deep terminal branch of the radial nerve is also known as the posterior interosseous nerve.
  • The radial nerve originates from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus.

Radial Nerve Pathway

  • The radial nerve descends behind the brachial artery in the arm.
  • The terminal branch of the radial nerve that passes through the supinator muscle is the posterior interosseous nerve.
  • The radial nerve passes between the brachialis and brachioradialis muscles before terminating in front of the lateral epicondyle.
  • The radial nerve pierces the lateral intermuscular septum to descend to the front of the lateral epicondyle.

Radial Nerve Composition

  • The root values of the radial nerve are C5-C8 and T1.

Test your knowledge on the origin, course, branches, and effects of injury of the radial nerve, as well as the segmental innervation and dermatomes of the upper limb. This quiz is based on Lecture 12 by Dr. Talaat Moustafa and references Snell’s Clinical Anatomy by Regions (10th ed.).
