Windows 10 Overview
- Windows 10 is the most recent version of the operating system from Microsoft, officially released in 2015.
- It combines features from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to suit users of desktop/laptop computers and mobile devices.
- The Start screen tiles from Windows 8 were replaced, and the Start Menu was brought back.
- The vertical toolbars (or “charms”) that appeared from the sides of the screen were removed.
Windows Desktop Basics
- The Windows Desktop is the operating system's main screen, providing access to tools like the Start Menu, Taskbar, and other icons.
- The Taskbar sits at the bottom of the screen, giving access to the Start Menu, application icons, and the Notification Area.
- The search box in the Taskbar facilitates browsing both the computer and the Web.
Icons
- Icons are graphic representations of applications or files that can be opened by double-clicking on them.
- Icons can be added to the Desktop by following steps: right-click on the Desktop Background, choose “New” and “Shortcut”, browse for the application or file, assign a name, and click “Finish”.
Start Menu
- The Start Menu is the main point of access to applications, featuring a left pane and a right pane.
- The left pane allows users to access frequently used applications, change account settings, change computer settings, shut down the computer, and see all installed applications.
- The right pane features tiles of applications or games that can be moved, dragged, and configured.
Taskbar
- The Taskbar sits at the bottom of the screen, giving access to the Start Menu, icons of frequently used applications, and the Notification Area.
- Icons in the middle of the Taskbar are “pinned” applications, which can be accessed quickly and stay in the Taskbar until unpinned.
Search Box
- The search box on the Taskbar allows users to search within documents, files, or on the Web.
- Results appear within the Start Menu, grouped by closest match.
WordPad and Notepad
- Notepad is a text editor that supports left-to-right and right-to-left based languages.
- WordPad is a free rich text editor that can format and print text, but lacks intermediate features like spell checking and support for tables.
Control Panel
- The Control Panel provides the ability to view and change system settings, consisting of applets that include adding or removing hardware and software, controlling user accounts, and accessing networking settings.
- The Control Panel can be opened by clicking the Start button, typing “Control Panel” in the search box, and pressing Enter.
Recycle Bin
- The Recycle Bin is temporary storage for deleted files that have not yet been permanently erased from the file system.
- Files can be recovered from the Recycle Bin by right-clicking on the file and selecting “Restore”, which returns the file to its original directory and name.
- The Recycle Bin only stores files deleted from hard drives, not from removable media or network drives.
