Accessing the Operating System and Hardware
- The control panel is used to access and control the operating system and hardware devices, as well as all programs.
- The control panel can be accessed from the start menu.
Customizing the Desktop
- Desktop icons can be changed by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting "Personalize", and then "Change desktop icons".
- The default icon shapes can be restored by clicking the "Restore Default" button.
- The desktop background can be changed by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting "Personalize", and then "Select desktop background".
- Screen savers can be added by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting "Personalize", and then "Select screen saver".
- The account picture can be changed by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting "Personalize", and then "Change your account picture".

- Application programs can be classified into:
- System software: Exists on the hard disk and can be used by the user.
- Commercial ware: Needs a license, usually.
- Shareware: Available for free within a certain period as a trial, then needs a license to be purchased.
- Free ware: Available for free but with limited capabilities.
- Public ware: Available for free with full capabilities.
