    Canine Search Team (CST) Policies and Procedures

    • Purpose: To establish policies and procedures for Canine Search Teams (CSTs) within the Department.

    • Endorsements/Certifications: The Department recognizes a maximum of 14 CSTs, and may approve up to two CST-ITs to be certified. CST/CST-IT canines must pass the DHS/FEMA National Disaster Search Canine Readiness Evaluation Process before deployment.

    Procedures

    • Incident Response: Los Angeles Command and Control (LACC) notifies relevant personnel (CST handlers, battalion chiefs, canine coordinator, USAR coordinator) for CST-related requests and incidents. CSTs are assigned based on the shortest estimated time of arrival (ETA).

    • Supplies and Equipment: The Department provides necessary equipment to canine handlers, including electronic collars, leashes, crates, kennels, protective gear, and GPS units.
