Cryptococcosis is transmitted through inhalation of dried pigeon feces. Clinical manifestations include fever, cough, dyspnea, non-cavitary lesions on chest X-ray, CNS disease, and obstructive hydrocephalus in rare cases.

Cryptococcosis can be diagnosed through culture of budding encapsulated fungus, detection of antigen in CSF and serum using Indian Ink stain or serology with agglutination assay. Findings include pleocytosis, increased opening pressure, increased protein, and decreased glucose in the CSF.

What are the treatment options for cryptococcosis?
Treatment for cryptococcosis includes oral fluconazole, severe cases may require amphotericin B and flucytosine, and lifelong fluconazole may be necessary.
