Flashcards

Main elements of First Aid/CPR AED

Assess scene safety, take standard precautions, assess responsiveness, activate EMS, get first aid kit and AED, and obtain consent for providing help.

High-quality CPR includes

Compressing fast and hard, giving effective rescue breaths, and avoiding leaning on the chest between compressions.

Adult chain of survival

Early recognition of cardiac arrest, prompt activation of EMS, and immediate high-quality CPR. Pulseless ventricular tachycardia is NOT relevant.

Pediatric chain of survival

Prevention of causes of cardiac arrest, prompt activation of EMS, and immediate high-quality CPR. Early electrical cardioversion (when indicated) is NOT always included.

Study Notes

Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR AED Elements

  • Assess scene safety, take standard precautions, assess responsiveness
  • Activate EMS and/or your emergency action plan and send someone to get the first aid kit and an AED.

High-Quality CPR

  • It is required when an adult, child, or infant is unresponsive and not breathing normally or only gasping

High-Quality Adult CPR

  • Includes hard and deep compressions

High-Quality Child CPR

  • Involves compressions to a depth of at least 1 inch or 2.5 centimeters.

High-Quality Infant CPR

  • Includes compressions to a depth of at least 1 and one-half inches or 4 centimeters

Immediate High-Quality CPR

  • Improves the victim's chance of survival by providing oxygen to the heart and brain

Adult Chain of Survival

  • Early recognition of cardiac arrest
  • Prompt activation of EMS
  • Immediate high-quality CPR.

Pediatric Chain of Survival

  • Prevention of causes of cardiac arrest
  • Prompt activation of EMS
  • Immediate high-quality CPR
  • Early electrical cardioversion (when indicated)

Choking Response – Encourage Coughing

  • If someone is choking but coughing, encourage the person to continue coughing

Assisting a Choking Child

  • If a child is choking weakly and cannot speak, give chest thrusts to dislodge the airway obstruction

Assisting a Choking Infant

  • If an infant is choking and cannot make sounds, give 5 back slaps to dislodge the object

Good Samaritan Definition

  • Someone who voluntarily renders aid to another in distress with no duty to do so
  • If the person is responsive and says "Yes, please", the legal concept allowing you to provide first aid is expressed consent

When Quick Action is Essential

  • Quick action is essential in life-threatening situations like unresponsiveness or difficulty breathing, and severe external bleeding

Opioid Overdose Response

  • For a person who overdosed on opioids, and is unresponsive but breathing normally, place the person in the recovery position

Post-Consciousness First Aid

  • After a person regains consciousness but was dizzy and hot, look for medical identification jewelry

Bleeding Control

  • Apply the gauze sponges onto the wound and push down hard

Shock Response

  • If a person shows signs of shock but is breathing, keep them lying down, face up, and give them a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink.

The FAST Memory Aid

  • Face, Arms, Speech, Time

Hypothermia Signs

  • Include shivering and altered mental status

Suspected Heat Stroke Response

  • If a person with suspected heat stroke is unresponsive and breathing normally, begin immediate cooling with the resources available

Responding to an Allergic Reaction

  • For a person stung by yellow jackets with rapid swelling and wheezing who has an EpiPen but does not know how to use it, administer an injection of epinephrine using the autoinjector

Healthy Lifestyle and Safety

  • A healthy lifestyle combined with a commitment to safety at work, home, and play helps to prevents many needless disabling injuries, illnesses, and deaths
