Convivencia
The term "convivencia" refers to the peaceful coexistence of different religious communities in medieval Spain. It was particularly relevant during the period known as the Reconquista, which lasted from approximately 718 AD until 1492 AD, when Granada fell to Christian forces led by Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. This era is also marked by Islamic rule over the majority of Hispania, with various Muslim dynasties governing parts of what would eventually become modern Spain and Portugal.
Under the Muslim rulers, Jews and Christians were allowed to live under Islamic law, which established some level of tolerance and protection for non-Muslims. This situation changed after the establishment of the Kingdom of Navarre in 1234, which guaranteed freedom of worship for all Christians within its dominions. As the Christian kingdoms expanded, they adopted similar policies, leading to a period of increased religious freedom and coexistence in Spain.
The concept of convivencia can also be applied to other contexts. In modern times, it has been used to describe the peaceful coexistence of different ethnic and religious groups in such diverse places as the Indian subcontinent, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Key Figures in Convivencia
Several key figures contributed to the concept of convivencia during the Reconquista:
- Alfonso X: He was a King of Castile and León from 1252 until his death in 1284. Although he did not directly rule Muslim territories, Alfonso's reign saw significant advances in interfaith relations between Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
- Alphonse V: He succeeded his father, Peter III of Aragon, and ruled from 1446 to 1458. Under Alphonse, Saragossa became one of the most tolerant cities in Europe.
- Isabel de Solis: A Jewish woman who gained prominence as a courtier and advisor during the reign of Charles V. She served as the queen's ambassador to the Papal States, and her life exemplifies how convivencia could extend beyond the royal family.
Influence on Modern Day Society
Despite the gradual decline of convivencia following the fall of Granada in 1492, it remains an important concept in today's world, where religious and ethnic diversity continues to pose challenges to peaceful coexistence and integration. Asked about the implications of this historical experience, contemporary historian Felipe Fernández-Armesto believes that there is still much to learn from the legacy of the Reconquista and its complex history: "There must be something in it that can help us to understand our present-day problems. We suffer from xenophobic nationalism and Islamophobia; these are two sides of the same coin. And I think that, without trying to romanticize this past history, we need to recognize that there was a time in which an alternative model of behaviour existed.".
