Drug Item Reduction Policy (DIRP)
- Aims to increase the number of cases worked
- Analyzes only the most important items based on quantity and schedule
- Residue items are typically not analyzed when accompanied by items containing a weighable quantity of drugs
- Exceptions are made for cases where residue is the only item connected to a suspect, the residue is a higher schedule than weighable material, or residue is the probable cause for a search
- Items not analyzed during the pretrial process can be resubmitted for priority analysis
Special Evidence Handling
- LSD in liquid form can be absorbed through the skin and is light sensitive. It should be handled with caution and wrapped in paper to block light.
- Fentanyl and other powerful opioids should be handled with special precautions to avoid inhalation or ingestion. Evidence suspected of containing fentanyl should be noted on the Request for Laboratory Examination form (RFLE).
- Syringes should be packaged in a rigid plastic safety tube and labeled “Handle with Caution,” “Contains a Syringe,” and “BIOHAZARD.”
- Other sharp or breakable materials should be packaged in a rigid container and labeled “Handle with Caution.”
- Items removed from body cavities or recovered from a toilet should be labeled “BIOHAZARD”.
- Cases involving found property with no identified suspect should not be submitted for analysis without a written request citing exigent circumstances.
Submission Reminders
- Notify DFS when a case becomes inactive
- Preserve potential latent fingerprints on evidence from a common area
- Items that establish probable cause should be clearly marked
- Items that need to be tested separately should be packaged separately
- Submit only necessary items for analysis
- Eliminate trash and ashes from ashtray submissions
- Use suitable packaging for small objects to prevent loss or crushing. Package small items in an envelope and then place it in a 5" x 7" container.
