Study Notes
Consonant Clusters
- A consonant cluster (CC) is a combination of more than one consonant in the onset or coda of a word.
- The combination /st/ is a consonant cluster used as an onset in the word "stop" and as a coda in the word "post".
- Many consonant cluster onset combinations are permitted in English phonotactics, such as "black" (/bl/), "bread" (/br/), "trick" (/tr/), "twin" (/tw/), "flat" (/fl/), and "throw" (/thr/).
Larger Onset Clusters
- English can have larger onset clusters, consisting of three initial consonants (CCC), as in the words "stress" (/str/) and "splat" (/spl/).
- In larger onset consonant clusters, a fairly regular pattern is observed:
- The first consonant must always be /s/.
- The second consonant must be a voiceless stop (/p/, /t/, or /k/).
- The third consonant must be a liquid (/l/ or /r/) or a glide (/w/).
- Examples of words that follow this pattern include "splash" (/spl/), "spring" (/spr/), "strong" (/str/), "scream" (/skr/), and "squeeze" (/skw/).
