Study Notes
Overview of Connective Tissue
- Comprises a group of tissues that maintain the body’s form and provide internal support and cohesion.
- Varies in density, cellularity, and degree of specialization.
Characteristics of Connective Tissue
- Contains cells (e.g., fibroblasts, adipocytes, macrophages, mast cells, plasma cells, eosinophils) in a matrix made of glycoproteins, fibrous proteins, and glycosaminoglycans.
- Extracellular matrix serves mechanical functions in structures like ligaments, tendons, and bones.
Types of Connective Tissue Cells
- Fixed Cells: Fibroblasts, adipocytes, macrophages, mast cells.
- Transient Cells: Plasma cells, eosinophils.
Non-Cellular Substrate
- Also called extracellular matrix or ground substance.
- Amorphous, gelatinous, transparent material that fills spaces between cells and fibers, facilitating transport of metabolites.
- Composed of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) that form proteoglycans, effective at resisting compressive forces.
Fibers in Connective Tissue
- Secreted by fibroblasts to create a supporting network for cell attachment.
- Three main types of fibers:
- Elastic Fibers: Provide flexibility.
- Collagen Fibers: Impart strength.
- Reticular Fibers: Form supportive networks.
Classification of Connective Tissue
-
Connective Tissue Proper
- Loose Connective Tissue: E.g., areolar, adipose, reticular.
- Dense Connective Tissue: E.g., regular, irregular.
-
Specialized Connective Tissue
- Supporting Connective Tissue: Cartilage (hyaline, fibrocartilage, elastic), Bone (compact and spongy).
- Fluid Connective Tissue: Blood, Lymph.
Connective Tissue Proper
- Composed of numerous cells and loose fibers.
- Slightly viscous fluid; foundational for other tissues.
Loose Connective Tissue Types
- Areolar: Covers muscle fibers, connects/supports tissues.
- Adipose: Functions as energy store, thermally insulates.
- Reticular: Provides framework in organs, contains cells like monocytes and lymphocytes.
Dense Connective Tissue
- Dense Regular: Collagen fibers arranged in parallel, offers tensile strength.
- Dense Irregular: Fibers arranged in various directions, provides strength in multiple directions.
Specialized Connective Tissue
- Cartilage: Contains chondrocytes within a matrix; three types (hyaline, fibrocartilage, elastic).
- Bone: Composed of compact and spongy types, strong structural support.
- Blood: A fluid tissue comprising plasma and various blood cells (erythrocytes, leucocytes, platelets), constantly circulating in the body.
Assessment and Activities
- Engage in formative and summative assessments through workbook exercises related to connective tissue.
