Study Notes
Active Listening
- Involves asking questions to understand the other person's feelings and reasoning
- Allows the person to express themselves
- Goes beyond simply hearing, it requires understanding their needs
- Questions like "How would you like things to be?" or "Would you like things to be different?" can encourage deeper understanding
Win-Win
- Requires thinking outside the box to find solutions that benefit everyone
- The goal is to meet the needs of both parties simultaneously
- Example: Tim wants the lemon rind for a cake while Sally wants the pulp for lemonade. A win-win solution would be to share the lemon, each party gets their desired part.
Compromise
- One party gives up some of their wants in exchange for the other party gaining something
- No clear winner or loser
- Best solution when both parties are willing to give up something
"I" Messages and Assertiveness
- Effectively communicate emotions, identify the triggering situation, and propose a solution
- Avoids blaming and compromising other needs
- Example: "Dad, I feel annoyed when you yell from the kitchen for me to empty the trash while I'm studying. It makes me feel like you think I can't manage my time or chores, but I think I am capable."
Prejudice
- Judging someone based on race, religion, color, gender, or sexual orientation
- Conflict is almost inevitable
- Example: Jackie Robinson faced conflict when he broke the color barrier in baseball, both within the sport and with his teammates
Misunderstanding
- Often results from poor communication within a group
- Clarifying misunderstandings can be difficult if clear messages aren't used
- Gossip is a dangerous form of communication, messages change significantly before reaching everyone, and often hurts feelings
Conflict Management
- Inevitable within groups or teams
- Effective conflict resolution is an important skill for leaders
- Multiple approaches exist, good leaders use different ones based on the situation
The Communication Process
- Crucial for leadership success
- 70% of daily activities involve communication
- For effective communication, understanding the message is critical
- Requires:
- Knowledge of different communication types
- Development of good listening skills
- Paraphrasing and feedback
Communication Model
- Three directions of communication: upward, downward, and lateral
Upward Communication
- Flows from lower to higher levels in an organization
- Helps leaders stay informed about team members' goals, performance, feelings, morale, and organizational concerns
- Provides suggestions for improvement
Downward Communication
- Leaders communicate with followers or coaches instructing athletes
- Used for assigning goals, providing instruction, giving feedback, and highlighting problems
Lateral Communication
- Occurs among members at the same level, like students, teachers, or team members
- Saves time and facilitates coordination
- Allows group decisions to be communicated to the leader with solidarity.
