6 Questions

What is the unit of measurement for mass concentration?

grams per liter (g/L)

What is the formula to calculate the molarity of a solution?

M = moles of solute / liters of solution

What is the difference between mass concentration and molar concentration?

Mass concentration is the mass of solute per unit volume of solution, while molar concentration is the number of moles of solute per unit volume of solution.

How is the percentage of a solution by mass calculated?

% = (mass of solute / mass of solution) x 100

What is the relationship between normality and molarity?

Normality is related to molarity by the formula: N = M x number of equivalents per mole

What is the difference between a 2 M NaCl solution and a 2 N NaCl solution?

A 2 M NaCl solution contains 2 moles of NaCl per liter of solution, while a 2 N NaCl solution contains 2 equivalents of NaCl per liter of solution.

Study Notes

Concentration

  • Measures the amount of solute present in a given amount of solution
  • Expressed in units of mass per unit volume (e.g. grams per liter, g/L)
  • Types of concentration:
    • Mass concentration: mass of solute per unit volume of solution (e.g. g/L)
    • Molar concentration: number of moles of solute per unit volume of solution (e.g. mol/L)
    • Volume concentration: volume of solute per unit volume of solution (e.g. mL/mL)

Molarity

  • Molar concentration of a solution, expressed in units of moles per liter (mol/L)
  • Denoted by the symbol M
  • Calculated using the formula: M = moles of solute / liters of solution
  • Example: 2 M NaCl solution contains 2 moles of NaCl per liter of solution

Percent Solution

  • Expresses the concentration of a solution as a percentage of the solute by mass or by volume
  • Calculated using the formula: % = (mass of solute / mass of solution) x 100
  • Example: 10% NaCl solution by mass contains 10 grams of NaCl per 100 grams of solution

Normality

  • Measures the number of equivalents of solute per liter of solution
  • Denoted by the symbol N
  • Equivalents are defined as the number of moles of solute reacting with one mole of another substance
  • Normality is related to molarity by the formula: N = M x number of equivalents per mole
  • Example: 1 N HCl solution contains 1 equivalent of HCl per liter of solution, which is equivalent to 1 mole of HCl per liter of solution

Concentration

  • Concentration measures the amount of solute present in a given amount of solution
  • Unit of measurement: mass per unit volume (e.g. grams per liter, g/L)
  • Three types of concentration:
    • Mass concentration: mass of solute per unit volume of solution (e.g.g/L)
    • Molar concentration: number of moles of solute per unit volume of solution (e.g.mol/L)
    • Volume concentration: volume of solute per unit volume of solution (e.g.mL/mL)

Molarity

  • The molar concentration of a solution, expressed in units of moles per liter (mol/L)
  • Denoted by the symbol M
  • Formula to calculate molarity: M = moles of solute / liters of solution
  • Example: 2 M NaCl solution contains 2 moles of NaCl per liter of solution

Percent Solution

  • Expresses concentration as a percentage of the solute by mass or by volume
  • Formula to calculate percent solution: % = (mass of solute / mass of solution) x 100
  • Example: 10% NaCl solution by mass contains 10 grams of NaCl per 100 grams of solution

Normality

  • Measures the number of equivalents of solute per liter of solution
  • Denoted by the symbol N
  • One equivalent is the number of moles of solute reacting with one mole of another substance
  • Formula to calculate normality: N = M x number of equivalents per mole
  • Example: 1 N HCl solution contains 1 equivalent of HCl per liter of solution, which is equivalent to 1 mole of HCl per liter of solution

Learn about the different types of concentration, including mass concentration, molar concentration, and volume concentration, and how to express them in units of mass per unit volume.
