Study Notes

Computing Basics - Chapter 7 - Software

  • Software is a collection of programs and related data that instructs the computer.
  • Software guides hardware and tells it how to complete tasks.
  • Software is categorized into:
    • System software:
      • Operates hardware and provides a platform for applications
      • Includes the operating system and utility programs
      • Manages computer resources at a low level
      • BIOS (basic input/output system) starts the computer, manages data flow between the operating system and devices (hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse, printer)
      • Boot program loads the operating system into RAM
      • System utilities (disk defragmenter and System Restore) are also included.
    • Programming software:
      • Provides tools for creating, debugging, maintaining, and supporting programs and applications.
      • Includes compilers, debuggers, linkers, and text editors, interpreters.
      • Example programming languages include C, C++, C#, BASIC, JAVA, Visual Basic, Python, HTML, and PHP.
    • Application software:
      • Programs or groups of programs designed to help users with specific tasks that are not related to computer functions
      • Examples: word processors, spreadsheets, presentation software, database management systems, desktop publishers, graphic editors, web browsers

Software Licensing

  • A legal contract that governs software usage and redistribution.
  • Most software applications have a license
  • Licenses can be based on the number of users or machines that can run the program.

Types of Software Licenses

  • Registerware: Requires user registration with personal information for downloading or usage.
  • Shareware/Demoware: Copyrighted commercial software distributed on trial basis with limitations in functionality, availability, or convenience.
  • Freeware: Available for use with no cost or an optional fee, differs from shareware (user has to pay)
  • Open Source Software (OSS): Free software, source code is available under a copyright license. Allows users to use, change, and improve the software, and redistribute (modified or unmodified) it.
  • Abandonware: Software not available for purchase or that is very old.

Software Piracy

  • Unauthorized copying of software without permission from the software holder.
  • Types of software piracy:
    • Counterfeit Software: Fake copies of software produced illegally
    • OEM Unbundling: Separating software from hardware it is bundled with.
    • Softlifting: Sharing software with users not authorized in the EULA (End-User License Agreement).
    • Hard Disk Loading: Hardware dealers install unauthorized copies onto computer systems
    • Internet Software Piracy: Downloading software from pirate websites, or through peer-to-peer file sharing.

Specific Software Examples

  • Word Processor: A software program that creates, stores, and prints documents

    • Features: Insert text, Delete text, Cut and paste, Copy, Set page size and margins, Search & replace, Printing
    • Examples: Microsoft Word, WordPro, AppleWorks
  • Spreadsheet: Data file in rows and columns, suitable for sorting, manipulating, and arranging data (mostly numerical)

  • Spreadsheet software also calculates values using formulas and data in cells.

    • Features: Formulas, Functions, Charts, Cut/Copy/Paste, Cells formatting, Cells merging.
    • Examples: Microsoft Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, Apple Numbers, OpenOffice Calc
  • Presentation Software: Programs that create slideshows to discuss or teach a topic; typical functions include an editor for inserting/formatting text, inserting/manipulating graphics images, and a slide-show system.

    • Features: Include slide insertion, deletion, cut and paste, duplication of content, slide view feature, and slide animation, and sound manipulations.
    • Examples: Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Persuasion, Hypercard, OpenOffice Impress, Scala Multimedia
  • Database Management System (DBMS): Controls the organization, storage, management, and retrieval of data in a database.

    • Examples: Microsoft Access, Oracle Database, MySQL, FoxPro
  • Desktop Publishing Software: Used to produce high-quality printed documents (magazines, greeting cards, posters). Enables using different typefaces, setting margins/justifications, and embedding illustrations/graphs into text

    • Examples: Adobe Indesign, QuarkXpress, MS Publisher
  • Web Browser: A software application used to locate and display Web pages; used to browse and access information over the internet

    • Examples: Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla Firefox, Opera
  • Graphics Software: Software/programs that allow users to manipulate visual images

    • Categories:
      • Raster Graphics: "bitmap" formats
      • Vector Graphics: Used for sharper artistic illustrations, and diagrams
    • Raster Graphic Editor Examples: Adobe Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, iPhoto, GIMP
    • Vector Graphic Editor Examples: Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, Xara Xtreme, Inkscape
  • Accounting Software: Application software for recording and processing accounting transactions using modules for accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and trial balance.

    • Features: Accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, billing, stock/inventory, purchase order, sales order, bookkeeping.
