Study Notes
Module: Computer System Servicing
- The module aims to enhance knowledge, skills, and attitudes for Computer Systems Service Technicians, aligning with industry standards.
- It covers basic and common competencies, including installation and configuration of computer systems, network setup, and server management. Maintenance and repair of computer systems and networks are also included.
Table of Contents
- The document lists Lesson 4 on CPU details.
Pre-Test
- Question 1: What is a CPU?
Objectives
- Students will be able to analyze different CPU specifications.
- Students will be able to explain the importance of selecting the correct CPU specification.
Lecture Notes: 12 Important Specifications of Processor (CPU)
- Most CPUs are made by Intel or AMD.
- Intel Core family includes i3, i5, i7, and i9 chips; AMD Ryzen includes 3, 5, 7, and 9 chips.
- Performance ranges from budget-level (Intel i3 and AMD Ryzen 3) to high-performance workstation level (Intel i9 and AMD Ryzen 9).
Clock Speed
- Clock speed measures the number of cycles performed per second (e.g., 3.1 GHz = 3.1 billion cycles/second).
- Higher speeds generally lead to faster computer performance. However, comparing clock speeds across different generations or manufacturers is not always meaningful.
- Older processors with higher clock speeds can be outperformed by newer processors with lower clock speeds but more cores.
Max Turbo Frequency
- AMD and Intel processors offer temporary performance boosts, referred to as Turbo Core or Turbo Boost, to operate above their typical frequencies.
Overclocking
- Overclocking involves increasing the base clock speed of a processor.
- Suitable for processors and motherboards enabling overclocking feature.
- It's important to ensure proper cooling, as overclocking generates more heat.
- Newer Intel CPUs, those ending with a 'K' or 'X', often have features for overclocking.
Core Count
- Most modern processors have multiple cores (microprocessors) for better multitasking and performance in heavy workloads.
- Users don't notice the dividing of work between cores as multiprocessing capabilities are very fast.
- Dual-core processors might be sufficient for basic users whereas quad-core or higher processors are more suitable for power users or enthusiasts.
Threads and Multi-Threading
- Thread count represents simulated cores. Processes are faster with more cores and threads for better handling of multiple tasks and efficiency from division of processing power.
- Intel and AMD utilize hyper-threading and simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) technologies, respectively, to achieve this.
L Caches
- CPUs have three levels of cache (L1, L2, and L3) for faster data access.
- L1 is the fastest but smallest, with L3 being the largest cache.
Memory Support
- DDR4 is the common RAM standard to consider, and it has higher transfer speeds compared to earlier generations.
- Memory speed (MHz) dictates transfer speeds with higher numbers representing faster RAM.
- The maximum supported DDR4 RAM speed (MHz) varies depending on CPU specifications.
Column Address Strobe (CAS) Latency
- CAS latency (or CL) measures the delay for data access in RAM. Lower values (nanoseconds) indicate faster access.
- Optimal performance is obtained with lower values in comparison.
TDP (Thermal Design Power)
- TDP is the power (in watts) a processor consumes measured under load conditions.
- Higher values indicate increased heat generation and require advanced cooling.
Fabrication Process, Micro-Architecture, Generation
- Fabrication process is measured in nanometers and represents semiconductor fabrication technology used in CPUs.
- Newer architectures are usually more advanced and efficient than older ones.
Socket Type
- A socket is a physical interface on the motherboard for CPU placement.
- AMD and Intel processors have unique socket types.
Chipset
- Chipset is a system on a motherboard that controls data flow between components.
- The chipset determines overclocking support and number of USB connections.
- More PCIe lanes lead to faster data transfer.
Integrated Graphics
- Some CPUs have integrated graphics (onboard).
- Discrete graphics cards provide better performance for demanding tasks, such as gaming and video editing.
Random Access Memory
- Random Access Memory (RAM) is a CPU-required aspect for processing applications.
