Using Illustrations and Graphics
- Graphics include variety of visual objects, photos, diagrams, SmartArt, charts, screenshots, and shapes.
- Pictures used to convey information that words can't.
- Pictures are embedded objects.
- Pictures can be inserted from a computer, internet source or cloud drive.
- Often, pictures from the web are copyrighted unless otherwise specifically stated.
- After inserting, formatting tools (Format tab) become available.
- Screenshots are captured images of screen portions.
- They can be formatted as any other image.
Inserting Video
- Videos commonly embedded in PowerPoint presentations versus Word documents
- Videos can be inserted and displayed directly within the document.
Inserting Shapes
- Shapes include lines, rectangles, arrows, equation shapes, flowcharts, and callouts.
- Shapes can be formatted using Drawing Tools (Format tab).
Inserting Symbols
- Symbols are characters not found on standard keyboard.
- Examples include copyright symbol, arrows, or custom icons.
Inserting WordArt

Drop Cap

Formatting Documents
- Formatting alters the document's appearance.
- Types include character formatting, paragraph formatting, page formatting, and document formatting.
Character Formatting
- Modifies individual characters.
- Includes font, size, bold, italic, underline, subscript, superscript, coloring, and highlighting characteristics.
- Includes artistic text effects like outlines and fill colors (often referred to as WordArt).
Paragraph Formatting
- Paragraph formatting changes the look of the paragraph.
- Altering things like alignment, indentation and spacing.
- Can include borders and shading of backgrounds.
Paragraph Formatting - Alignment
- Controls the horizontal positioning of text between page margins.
- Available options are Align Left, Align Right, Center, and Justify.
Paragraph Formatting - Indentation
- Creates blank space between the left margin and the start of a line (for example, a first line indent).
Paragraph Formatting - Spacing
- Controls the amount of space between lines in a paragraph (Line Spacing)
- Word adds space above/below paragraphs when Enter key is pressed.
Paragraph Formatting - Create and Modify Lists
- Lists begin with a character such as numbers or bullets.
- Number lists are ordered with the user's ability to change formatting and set starting numbers.
