Computer Security and Access Control Basics

Prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to resources, prevent legitimate users from accessing resources in an unauthorized manner, and enable legitimate users to access resources in an authorized manner.

NIST defines access control as the process of granting or denying specific requests to obtain and use information and related information processing services, and to enter specific physical facilities.

RFC defines access control as a process by which use of system resources is regulated according to a security policy and is permitted only by authorized entities according to that policy.
