Starting and Shutting Down a Computer

  • A computer needs to be properly started and shut down to avoid file corruption and damage to the operating system.
  • To start a computer:
    • Press the Power button
    • The Power-on-self test (POST) sequence runs, checking hardware components like keyboard, RAM, and disk drives
    • The operating system (e.g., Windows 7) boots up, and the desktop appears
  • To shut down a computer:
    • Save and close all files and applications
    • Click the Start button and select Shut Down, or choose Sleep or Hibernate options
    • The Taskbar displays icons for active applications and shortcuts

Taskbar Components

  • Start button: opens the Start menu, providing access to programs and features

Keyboard Operations
