Study Notes
Computer Networks 1 (CSE 231)
- Introduction to computer networks and the internet
- Course objectives: data communication, network models, data transmission, data encoding, data communication interface, data link control, multiplexing, and switching techniques
What is the Internet?
- Network: a collection of interconnected devices that communicate with each other
- Computer Network: a collection of interconnected devices that communicate with each other using software and hardware
- Objectives of computer networks: data communication, resource sharing, and communication
Network Criteria
- Performance: throughput, delay, and jitter
- Reliability: accuracy, precision, and correctness
- Security: authentication, authorization, and encryption
Data Communication
- What is Data Communication?: the process of transferring data between devices
- Components of Data Communication: sender, receiver, transmission medium, and message
- Data Communication Model: sender, receiver, transmission medium, and message
Transmission Media
- Guided Transmission Media: wired media, such as twisted pair, coaxial cable, and fiber optic cable
- Unguided Transmission Media: wireless media, such as radio waves, microwaves, and infrared
Transmission Modes
- Simplex: one-way transmission
- Half-Duplex: two-way transmission, but not at the same time
- Full-Duplex: two-way transmission, at the same time
Networking
- Topologies: physical and logical arrangement of devices
- Protocols: set of rules and standards for communication
Network Categories
- Local Area Network (LAN): a network that spans a small geographical area
- Wide Area Network (WAN): a network that spans a large geographical area
- Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): a network that spans a metropolitan area
Access Networks
- Residential Access Networks: home networks, using DSL, cable, or fiber
- Institutional Access Networks: school, company, and organization networks
- Mobile Access Networks: wireless networks, such as WiFi, 4G, and 5G
Access Networks (continued)
- Digital Subscriber Line (DSL): a type of broadband access using existing telephone lines
- DSL advantages: fast, dedicated, and shared
- Home Networks: wireless and wired devices, using cable or DSL modem and router
- Wireless Access Networks: shared wireless access network connects end system to router
- Enterprise Networks: companies, universities, and organizations, using Ethernet, switch, and institutional router
