    Study Notes

    Hardware Components

    • Hardware are the physical parts of a computing device that you can touch.
    • Examples include desktop computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, storage devices, input devices, and output devices.
    • Input devices take information into the computer, examples include keyboards, mice, scanners, and styluses.
    • Output devices display or create information from the computer, examples include printers and speakers.
    • Ports are used to connect input and output devices to the motherboard.
    • Wireless technologies like Bluetooth connect devices within 10-100 meters, requiring each device to have a Bluetooth chip and be paired.
    • WiFi connects devices to each other and the internet, using the local WiFi network.

    Internal Components

    • The motherboard is the main circuit board holding the CPU, memory, and storage components.
    • The CPU (central processing unit) carries out commands from software, returning results. Speed is measured in hertz.
    • Multi-core CPUs (quad-core, Core i9 with 16 cores) increase processing speed.
    • Memory is temporary storage called RAM (random-access memory) that applications are loaded into for faster run times. RAM data is cleared when the computer is powered off.
    • More RAM is faster.

    Storage

    • Hard disks (HD) provide longer, permanent storage of data.
    • Solid state drives (SSD) are lighter and faster than HDs with no moving parts.
    • Removable media like USB drives can be connected to different computers.
    • More storage space and faster data transfer rates are ideal.

    Storage Measurement

    • Digital devices process electronic signals in 1's and 0's, called bits.
    • Eight bits equal one byte.
    • Kilobyte (KB) is one thousand bytes.
    • Megabyte (MB) is one million bytes.
    • Gigabyte (GB) is one billion bytes.
    • Terabyte (TB) is one trillion bytes.

    Software

    • Software is a set of instructions telling hardware what to do.
    • Two main types of software are operating systems and application software.
    • Operating systems manage hardware, create a user interface, and provide a platform for software developers to write applications.
    • Examples include Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS, and Linux.

    Application Software

    • Application software helps users accomplish goals and purposes.
    • Productivity software allows employees to complete job duties efficiently, examples include Microsoft Office.
    • Utility software assists in fixing or modifying a computer, examples include antivirus software.
    • Programming software allows developers to code, test, and convert software into a computer-readable format, often free from the company that developed the language.
    • Enterprise application software includes ERP (Enterprise Resource Applications), CRM (Customer Relationship Management), and SCM (Supply Chain Management).

    Enterprise Application Software

    • ERP provides a common application supporting functions across an entire enterprise.
    • ERP may include aspects of general ledger and subsidiary accounts like accounts payable and receivables, building in best business practices.
    • SAP is the most popular ERP.
    • CRM manages an organization's customers and personalizes relationships with them. Salesforce is an example of a CRM.
    • SCM manages relationships between suppliers, manufacturing, and distributors.
    • ERP may encompass aspects of CRM and SCM.

    Cloud Computing

    • Cloud computing refers to internet-based applications, services, and data storage, examples include email and Google Drive.
    • Advantages: No software installation or updates, access with internet connection, data accessibility even with a hard drive crash, quick access to new apps.
    • Disadvantages: Information is stored on someone else's computer, internet access is required, reliance on a third-party provider.

    Open Source Software

    • Open-source software code is shared for everyone to use, modify, and add features.
    • Large programmer groups can contribute to bug fixes and new features.
    • Software is available for free.
    • Users can review source code before installing.
    • Open source can pose an increased risk of attack as everyone knows the software structure.
    • Examples include Firefox browser and Linux operating system.

    Closed Source Software

    • Closed-source software's technical support is provided by the company that developed it.
    • Companies employ large numbers of developers to continuously improve products.
    • Smartphones and mobile use are increasing significantly, mobile commerce accounts for a large portion of e-commerce traffic.
    • The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of connected devices collecting data. Examples include fitness trackers, garage door openers, refrigerator grocery lists, thermostats, home security systems, and medical devices.
