    Study Notes

    Computer Hardware and Software Components

    • A computer is made up of hardware and software.
    • Hardware is the physical components of a computer system. Examples include the monitor, keyboard, mouse, hard drive, and the system unit (graphic cards, sound cards, memory, motherboard, and chips).
    • Input/output (I/O) devices allow information to be sent to or received from the computer.
    • Input devices translate human-understandable data into a format the computer can process.
    • Examples of input devices include keyboards, numeric keypads, pointing devices (like mice and joysticks), touch screens, scanners, graphics tablets, microphones, digital cameras, webcams, and light pens.
    • Output devices communicate the results of computer processing into a human-readable format.
    • Examples of output devices include monitors (CRT, TFT, LCD projection panels, and computer output microfilm), printers (laser printers, inkjet printers, dot matrix printers), plotters, and speakers.

    Central Processing Unit (CPU)

    • The CPU is the brain of a computer, responsible for all functions and processes.
    • It is the most important element for computing power.
    • The CPU has three main parts:
      • Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU): performs arithmetic and logical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, comparisons).
      • Control Unit (CU): controls and coordinates computer components.
    • Registers store data that is to be executed next. This is very fast storage.

    Memory

    • Memory, often specifically RAM (Random Access Memory), is temporary storage for programs and data whilst running.
    • RAM is volatile; content is lost when power is turned off.
    • Read-Only Memory (ROM) stores unchanging or essential data and is non-volatile.
    • CMOS, a type of ROM, stores BIOS settings.

    Other Storage Devices

    • Hard Drives: permanent storage.
    • Optical Disks (like CDs and DVDs): permanent storage using lasers.
    • Flash Disks: portable and faster storage using flash memory with no moving parts.

    Motherboard and Ports

    • The motherboard connects all the computer components.
    • Ports allow peripheral device connections to the computer.
      • Serial ports (older, less common)
      • Monitor ports (e.g., VGA, DVI)
      • Parallel ports (mainly for older printers)
      • USB ports (Universal Serial Bus, commonly used today)
      • FireWire/IEEE 1394 ports (often used for high-bandwidth peripherals like digital cameras)
      • PS/2 ports (mostly for older keyboards and mice)
      • Ethernet ports (network connections)

    Other Components

    • Power Supply: converts AC power to DC power for the computer.
    • Expansion Cards: add functions to the computer. Examples include sound cards and graphics cards.
    • Network Card: facilitates computer connection over a network. Allows data transmission at differing rates (10, 100, or 1000 megabits).
    • CD/DVD/ROM drives: read CDs and DVDs. Some can also write to these formats.
    • Floppy Drives: used with older floppy disks.
    • Case: protects the internal components and contains the motherboard, CPU, etc.
    • Heatsink: disperses heat generated by the CPU and other components.

    Software

    • Software is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do.
    • System software (e.g., operating systems): fundamental functions like managing hardware and providing services to applications.
    • Application software (e.g., word processors, games): performs specific tasks for users.
    • Examples of operating systems include Windows, Linux, macOS, and DOS.
    • Examples include word processors; spreadsheet programs; database programs; presentation programs; graphics programs; web browsers, and video games.

    Data Representation and Number Systems

    • Computer data is represented using binary numbers (0 and 1).
    • Other number systems used in computing include decimal, octal, and hexadecimal.
