Study Notes

Classification of Computers by Size

  • Supercomputers: the fastest, most powerful, and expensive type of computer, designed to process vast amounts of data in a short time with high productivity.
  • Mainframe computers: multi-programming, high-performance, multi-user computers that can handle the workload of over 100 users at a time, with enormous storage capacity and high-speed data processing.
  • Minicomputers: multi-user, general-purpose computers that are slower than mainframes, but capable of performing similar tasks.

Classification of Computers by Purpose

  • General Purpose Computers: designed to perform a variety of common tasks, adaptable, but less effective and slower.
  • Special Purpose Computers: designed to perform a single specific task, with programs permanently stored in internal memory, making them less expensive.

Classification of Computers by Type

  • Analog Computers: measure continuously varying aspects of physical quantities such as electrical current, voltages, hydraulic pressure, and other electrical and mechanical properties.
  • Digital Computers: use digits to represent letters, numbers, and special symbols, with on-off (ON-OFF) inputs, and create ON-OFF signals.
  • Hybrid Computers: combine digital and analog systems, handling both digital and analog inputs, used in medical science, controlling industrial processes, and scientific applications.

Components of a Computer System

  • Hardware: physical components of a computer system.
  • Software: intangible components of a computer system, such as programs and operating systems.
  • Humanware: the people who use, operate, and manage the computer system.

Microcomputers

  • Low-cost digital computers with a single microprocessor, storage unit, and input/output device.
  • Designed for individual use only.
  • Examples include desktop, laptop, tablet, workstation, PDA, and palmtop computers.
