Temporary Upgrading
- Employees acting as a company officer or shift commander for 1 hour or more are compensated at the current starting pay for that position.
- Acting Lieutenants and Battalion Chief lists are created at the completion of the corresponding promotional process.
- These lists include all individuals who participated in the promotional process, regardless of whether they achieved the minimum score.
- Employees can decline to act, but those on the Lieutenant or Battalion eligibility list cannot.
Sick and Injury Leave
- Full-time employees accrue sick leave at a rate of 12 hours per month, with a maximum accumulation of 1080 hours.
- Employees receive 24 hours of basic straight-time hourly pay for each day of accrued sick leave used.
- Sick leave can be used hour for hour.
- Notification of absence due to sickness must be given to the on-duty Battalion Chief or Station 1 Lieutenant at least one hour prior to the employee's shift.
- Sick leave abuse is a serious matter and may be subject to discipline, including medical consultations, physician's verification, and other investigative steps.
- Employees can use or donate up to 24 hours of sick time per calendar year without affecting PEHP calculations, as long as they have over 720 hours accrued.
- Employees may be required to provide a physician's verification of illness if they use sick leave before or after a scheduled vacation or shift trade day off twice within a 24-month period.
Grievance Procedure
- Grievances must be submitted in writing to the Deputy Chief within ten business days of the event giving rise to the grievance.
- The Deputy Chief must respond in writing within ten business days.
- If the grievance is not settled at Step 1, it can be appealed to the Fire Chief within ten business days.
- The Fire Chief must respond in writing within ten business days.
- If the grievance is not settled at Step 2, it can be appealed to the Board of Trustees within ten days.
- The Board of Trustees must respond in writing within forty calendar days.
- If the Board of Trustees does not respond within the time period, the grievance is deemed denied, and the Union can refer it to arbitration.
Educational/Training Process
- The District sets aside an annual allocation for each full-time bargaining unit member for education and training, up to $1,750 per fiscal year.
- The District will generally provide opportunities for education and training outside the District.
- Employees are responsible for taking advantage of all District-initiated training opportunities.
- The Employer will pay for preapproved classes for employees with at least six months of credible service for courses related to the fire service, rescue, and emergency medical areas.
- Employees must repay the District for the cost of courses they do not complete with a passing grade.
- Employees can donate their training allocation to another full-time employee under certain conditions.
- Employees requesting outside classes or training not mandated must complete a Training Request form and submit it to the Fire Chief for approval.
- The District provides shift coverage for employees for classes, seminars, and training sessions that the District mandates.
- The District may allow members to attend approved classes while on duty, up to a maximum of 12 hours per shift, if minimum staffing requirements are maintained.
