Colostomy Definition and Purpose
- A colostomy is a surgical procedure where a damaged part of the colon is removed and the remaining end is diverted to an opening in the abdominal wall.
- It can be temporary or permanent.
- A colostomy is performed when the natural passage of feces from the colon to the anus is blocked, by disease, birth defect, or trauma affecting the rectum or anus.
- It's also used to redirect fecal flow from an inflamed area or surgical site.
- It's used to treat large intestine disorders, including cancer, obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, ruptured diverticulum, ischemia, or injury.
- The colon is shortened to remove a damaged section, and the remaining end is diverted to an opening in the abdominal wall.
Indications for Colostomy
- Birth defects
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Colon or rectal injury
- Partial or complete intestinal blockage
