Cold Work
- Any work activity that does not involve a source of ignition
- Examples: bolting and unbolting of pipeline and vessel flanges using hand tools, removal of electrical and instrument equipment that has been de-energized
- Permit color is normally Blue
- Permit can be renewed for 5 Shifts or 2.5 Days (renewal period may vary company to company)
- Some cold work activities may require continuous gas monitoring, depending on the activity
Hot Work
- Any work activity involving a source or potential source of ignition
- Examples: welding, burning, grinding, disk cutting, portable engines, sand blasting, working on electrical/electronic equipments
- Permit color is normally Red
- Permit is valid for only one shift
- Initial gas test and continuous gas monitoring are required
- Gas test must be conducted around the work area about 10 to 15 meters
- Fire extinguisher and water hose must be kept as standby
- Safety watch is required for welding or other big hot works
Confined Space Permit
- Normally permit color is Yellow or Green
- Permit is valid up to 14 days (renewal period may vary company to company)
- Gas test and continuous gas monitoring are required before entry/starting the job
- Confined space procedure must be followed, including positive isolation, gas freeing, ventilation, providing enough lighting, and safety watch
- Confined space permit is only to enter into a confined space, and cold or hot work permit is required based on the activity
